I saw Martin Bodenham referee top division football and umpire first class cricket.

Steve O'Shaughnessy - cricketer for Lancs and later an umpire

Steve O'Shaughnessy - Rochdale player from 1988-91

Not the same person!

Tim Robinson was a Nottinghamshire cricketer of some distinction for many years.  He played quite a few test matches for England, although he never quite lived up to his promise at top level.  He has been a first-class umpire for many years now and officiated at some international games.

I believe there is a referee with the same name somewhere in the lower leagues.  I don't think there is much doubt who is more famous.

I think that rather undersells his playing career.  As an opener he averaged in the upper 30s over 29 games and his record against Australia was better still.  He would go straight into the current England team without any question.

Was he any good at either?
Nice man though a perfect gentleman.

Martin was an excellent referee who had a reputation (in his early Football League years at least) of being a bit of a car shark.  Less so, later on.  He was - as you describe - a perfect gentleman with a good sense of humour.  He also did a lot of work developing end mentoring Sussex referees and helping to further their careers.

He must have been a very good umpire, because not many (in those days) made to the First Class list without having played at that level.  There are more these days, but the ECB still regards playing at that level as a definite positive when it comes to umpiring.   Of course, the willingness of a large number of retiring first class cricketers facilitates this, I do not see the same volume of top footballers queueing up to do the same.

Very decent at both, world class at neither.
Seemed to enjoy his work.

In my opinion Martin was a good referee, he was 4th official in 1994 european cup final.
Refereed the 1997 league cup final and replay and two f a cup semi finals.
On retirement became an assessor and a eufa delegate too.

He was highly regarded as an umpire in the first class game, officiating in many top division county championship games. As stated by others a first class gentleman too, i had many a pleasant conversation with him during his umpiring days.

An extremely pleasant and delightful man is certainly my experience of him also. I think he can be regarded as one of the most unfortunate never to have received an FA Cup Final Appointment. Not really sure why he didn't. He was very well regarded by many. I suspect because there were a good many first rate referees about when he was in his pomp eg Worrall, Midgely, Hill, Don, Elleray, Gallagher . Outrageous though that Milford and Barratt both got the Final when it could have gone to Bodenham
