Mark Halsey suggested in a radio interview the other day that SG2 referees will be used as VARs for some Premier League games - if correct, it does beg the question as to why none have been used as VAR in the trial stage?

I suspect because the priority will have been to train the SG1 refs first as they will naturally be the first choice.

They spent most of last season training Neil Swarbrick/Mike Jones on VAR who haven't done a single game this year!

This is so true!

The FA plan to use VAR for all 6th round FA Cup ties onwards from next season, regardless of venue (Times).

Not before time imho.

Can you imagine Andy Davies telling Michael Oliver that he's got a decision wrong?!

If there's any justice, Andy Davies will be reffing on the National League next season. The absolute farce of the Oxford v Bradford game last Saturday should result in demotion.

Mike Riley has talked in the press of 'more promotions to SG1' to take account of the need next season for additional cover for VAR duties. So it seems the powers-that-be are going to be using SG1 refs for VAR work in the PL rather than SG2s / FLs or former refs. Looks promising imo for the likes of R Jones, A Madley and perhaps Messrs Bond, England and Robinson.

It will be interesting to see the number they arrive at - they obviously need more officials but equally you don't want so many officials that some of the SG are virtually never getting the chance to referee Premier League games (or maybe you do!)

If some are promoted primarily for VAR use then that should be made clear, to them if no-one else. Agree with ReadingFan point. There's only 10 middles to cover so a VAR subgroup might be a preferable way to go.

Sam Wallace of the telegraph suggests that the Select Group are in negotiation regarding a pay rise for the extra duties they will have to do when VAR is introduced.

It's also been confirmed that if VAR is used to change a decision in FA Cup semi-finals this weekend a definitive replay of the incident will subsequently be shown on the big screens (I believe this was also the case at the World Cup last summer.)

Whilst VAR has had some major teething issues out here in Australia, I always found the clearest and most transparent of its uses was when the replays were shown on the screens inside the stadiums. It eliminates any doubt whatsoever.

I thought it worked well in the Spurs v Man City game last night - reasonably quick, decisive and not too intrusive.  In fact, almost exactly how I imagined it could work.

The only downfall being it wasn’t a penalty...

I think it was more of a penalty than many others we've seen - based on how international referees have adjudicated handball over the past 12 months or so, I think a penalty was the right decision.

I agree - not really a penalty under the UK interpretation but in a UEFA tie. as soon as I saw it, I had little doubt it would be given.  That all needs sorting out but it didn't alter the fact that the VAR side of things seemed to go pretty smoothly.

It's lucky for John Terry that he's not still playing. He always forgot to put on his goalkeeping gloves.

Not sure why an OFR was needed for the Ronaldo goal in the Juventus game - it was a perfectly good goal.Turpin correctly allowed it to stand.
