I heard a bit of the IFAB Press Conference after the AGM last week. They spoke a bit about the semi-automated offside VAR and how the information would be fed directly to the VAR rather than the on-field officials. They have yet to make a final decision on if it will be used at the World Cup.

There's been some talk about what impact the system will have on the delayed flag process and I'm intrigued as to what it will be. It might work to have a system where the assistant communicates over the headset that they believe it to be offside and the VAR confirms this if so. It would be interesting as to how this worked in practice.

I am also wondering how they will deal with situations where there is ambiguity over whether a defender deflected the ball or deliberately played it. It might end up being the case that we still generally need to wait until the end of play before the decision is made so the delayed flag will still operate but the final decision will just be quicker? Not having to wait 3 or 4 minutes for lines to be drawn would certainly be a good thing.

The IFAB press conference also mentioned they would be looking at ways to deal with timekeeping. Perhaps the independent timekeeper concept or 60 minute games could be back on the table?

Thanks - so confirmation the system will be used at World Cup. I think that it will be a good development for VAR.

Ideally, there would be some mechanism in place to alert fans and viewers if the system has indicated a likely offside which the VAR is just confirming.

If the assistant delays the flag and indicates over the headset they believe it to be offside, I wonder if something will be built in to allow the VAR to confirm this if the system indicates it? In time, that could stop the game from carrying on if the offside decision is known to be correct.

With the delayed flag, I still think that was something the Premier League got right initially and the approach of the assistant raising the flag but the referee delaying the whistle was preferable. It at least gave fans an idea of the likely final decision.

Once again today there has been a spate of debatable VAR decisions today , people say they are factual but are they ?? For me it’s a safety net for referees and it’s another referees ( the VAR referee ) opinion. VAR is a shambles in England every week it throws up debates that range from VAR getting involved when there was no need to VAR getting decisions wrong this shouldn’t be the case VAR should only be used for clear and obvious errors by the onfield officials

Must remember to record Ref Watch tomorrow if I'm not in at the time.  Plenty for Dermot and pundits to chew over.
My own view is that Mason, Gillett and Scott wrongly got involved and advised OFRs, while Coute failed to intervene when he should have done.  I was surprised that in the Brentford v Leeds game, Jones didn't give anything for the pull-back outside, or the foul just inside, the area.

Is VAR intervening on ball in and out of play now, it hasn’t been in previous years? @newcastle v West Ham

It has always had the ability to intervene on ball in/out play if definitive footage existed that the on-field decision was wrong.

There was the Japan goal V Germany in the World Cup which was initially disallowed but given after VAR review.

Yes because its a matter of fact, its already happened on a game this season I seem to remember.

But surely it can only intervene in relation to one of the four categories for which VAR is used?  It would not intervene on an incorrect line decision that does not revolve around a goal, penalty kick, red card or case of mistaken identity (although I am struggling to think of a case where that could happen!).

To be honest with each passing week I get more and more confused by what should be referred and what shouldn’t

It can be used to check for goal scored in the absence of GLT, been done a couple of times in Hungary, we don't have GLT. It comes under goal check for VAR purposes.

I don't really get the confusion - Newcastle scored shortly after the ball had gone out of play so as part of the goal check the VAR identified that the officials had made an error and play was restarted with the goal-kick rather than the goal being allowed. It's just the same process as if for instance the officials had missed an offside or a handball offence in the build-up to the goal.

The Athletic's David Ornstein, who I'd say is pretty reliable, reports that Neil Swarbrick is set to retire as Head of VAR at end of the season.

It's been reported by The Times/ESPN that the semi-automated offside system won't be introduced to the Premier League next season so they will continue with the current approach for offsides.

I'm not convinced this is a good decision.
