Then have a contestable drop ball.

That is up to the players. A referee cannot decide who contests the ball so if the players choose not to contest it then that's up to them.
Hajrá Lilák. Csak a Kispest. Hajrá Magyarok! Hajrá játékvezetői csapat! Soha ne add fel. Nincs sárga kérem!!! No Chris Kavanagh doesn't live in Ashton or even in the Greater Manchester area!!

On a general note, I felt Marriner's signals after the decision weas overturned were rather half-hearted - I'm not sure he even blew the whistle and it seemed like it was only when a message appeared on the big screen that teh supporters reacted.

Another reason why I prefer the referee to go and look for themselves like happened at the World Cup - I think it made the process a lot clearer.

In theory

Law quite clear - drop ball at point of incident and everything else after is irrelevant.

I've been trying to clarify this - please could you advise of the exact wording?

The restart is for whatever happens first.  If the whistle was blown before the ball went out of play then of course the restart is a dropped ball, whereas if the ball went out before the whistle the retake should be a corner.  Having seen slowed down replay it is clear the ball was over the line by some distance by the time the whistle was blown.  Had there not been VAR, and rather (as an example) the AR had advised the referee had make a mistake, I could accept getting the restart wrong.  But this shouldn't happen with VAR, Graham Scott should be saying something like "cancel the penalty, restart with corner kick as the ball was out of play when you blew the whistle".

I've seen a lot of people, such as Keith Hackett, suggesting that if they couldn't have VAR at every game in the fourth round they should have waited until the fifth round to introduce it for each tie.

But I don't really see what advantage that would serve - the likes of Everton would still have been knocked out of the cup in the fourth round and surely the aim for most supporters is to win the cup, not to get to the fifth round!

Thank you for clarifying.

And therein lies the problem. If they can't get something simple like that right what hope is there. They need to recruit some good competent people to be VARs who don't need years of practical refereeing experience.

I’ve been told that if the var has come in on a decision a dropped ball is awarded regardless of whether it went out or not. Make of that what you want!

Well now we have another one.  Andy Madley has just given a penalty to Brentford that at best can be described as soft, and in all reality was plain wrong.  Had that been at a PL ground it would undoubtedly been overturned, so the complaints about inconsistency will continue.

I think Watkins can expect a charge from the FA for a clear case of  simulation that has deceived the match officials.

but there was no penalty therefore the charge is not complete.

I’m not sure I follow your logic? They got the pen and scored from it?

Not a Clear dive but lost balance! VAR would have got correct decision here but sadly not in use.
