My beautiful NBI ruined from next season...

VAR almost certain from next season: http://www.csakfoci.hu/magyar-foci/nb-i/nb-i-szinte-biztos-hogy-a-kovetkezo-idenytol-mar-lesz-var-itt-az-mlsz-reakcioja

Basic translation:

As is well known, the plans of the Hungarian Football Association at the beginning of last year were that there could have been a video referee in NB I matches this season, but delays were caused by the pandemic.

csakfoci.hu asked the MLSZ - we know that currently training is taking place in the background of referees for the VAR system and have also started the technical preparation, in the cutting-edge stadiums.

THEREFORE, TO OUR KNOWLEDGE, VAR IS LIKELY TO BE APPLIED FROM THE NEXT CALL FOR NB I.

The Hungarian Football Association gave the following answer in connection with the topic :

The use of the video refereeing  system is required by a rigorous and continuously monitored international training protocol consisting of nine overlapping steps. According to the scenario rewritten several times due to the epidemic situation, the first four levels of this were realised in Hungary by April. Meanwhile, a survey of the facilities involved has taken place, and the stadiums are ready to receive VAR cars to ensure the operation of the system.

"The coronavirus epidemic causes unprecedented difficulties in all areas of life, so it also significantly affects the scenario of home VAR training ," Attila Hanacsek , vice-chairman of the refereeing committee of the Hungarian Football Association, told csakfoci.hu. - Our selected referees practiced the correct application of the VAR protocol for 11 days in the roles of “video referee” (VAR) and “video referee assistant” (AVAR) under conditions similar to the live situation. We also provide the operators of the camera images and technical equipment used by VAR: our referees are gaining more and more expertise in this area as well.

Despite the difficulties, MLSZ will continue to train its specialists in the coming days, and it is planned that the video judging system will be operational in the 2021-2022 season of the OTP Bank League.

Sadly it has now been confirmed. It was the MLSZ extraordinary meeting this week where the rules/format for next season are set out.  VAR will be mandatory in the NBI from 30th July when the season starts

Sorry the game has officially gone!

Never a red card for Leeds in a million years. Cooper plays the ball and there is an inevitable contact with the follow through.
Terrible decision from VAR!

I agree ajb95 ,  I do wonder if the official on VAR looks at the incident from different angles and speed take everything into account and ask themselves if they were refereeing that match would they overrule the referee and in this incident i bet it’s a no , I feel like based on this , the VAR  has viewed the angle that makes it look worse than it is and has sent the referee to the monitor I am surprised that a referee of Marriners experience came to a RC conclusion

Agreed Dave. How Coote saw that as a red but didn’t see Pickford’s tackle on van Dijk

I watched the challenge and said 'red' straight away.  Surprised it was only a yellow but when Marriner watched the screen his face said it all.  He realised straight away that he had misread it from where he'd seen it.  Well done VAR!  As for Walton, time he spent more time in his garden.

I would be interested to hear why ajb95 and dave26 think the tackle didn't warrant a red card, do you think it was a foul at all or just play on?

For me personally it is a nailed on red, yes he wins the ball but he lunges with both feet off the ground, at speed and makes contact with his studs into his opponents knee. I can't see how that doesn't endanger the safety of his opponent, but would be interested to hear others interpretations.

For me he doesn’t lunge in or have both feet off the ground. Players are allowed to slide in to tackle. He plays the ball and then there is contact which is inevitable given his foot is off the ground.
Every time a player goes in for a tackle there is going to be some kind of danger but that’s the risk of association football but no one is saying ban tackling (at the moment!)

Everything looks worse in slow motion..

Looking at it again you are correct that at the point of contact his trailing foot is still on the ground however it comes off the ground a moment later as he follows through.

I take you point about inevitable risk, however in my opinion, by tackling in this way you greatly increase that risk factor and that's where he has to take responsibility. I totally agree that the contact is inevitable but I just don't think he can come into the tackle and play the ball in that way without causing a significant risk to his opponent.

I have the feeling we will have to agree to disagree with this one but thank you for responding to me!

I haven't seen this particular incident but I do have some sympathy where the contact with ball or the ground causes the foot to rise and catch the opponent higher up.  The question for VAR though is "was it a clear and obvious error" not necessarily "would I have given a RC"? That said, Marriner, who on a previous occasion has stuck with his original (non-penalty) decision was obviously persuaded in this case.

Having watched the 2nd half and seen the incident only once, is it generally agreed that Fernandinho's what we might politely called a challenge only warranted a YC.  I'm tempted to use Hendo's conjecture used in his many swipes at the alleged controversial decisions that United get, "I wonder what the decision would be had that foul been by a Leeds player".  But as I say, maybe the YC was perfectly correct.

Sadly, the ball is no longer relevant in top level football. James Milner made a cracking tackle today taking the ball fair and square without any problem, however, his opponent issued the usual squeal and  was awarded a free kick and Milner was cautioned.

I think that Cooper was unfortunate today, however, that is the way in which the modern game at the top level has digressed into something which only bears a passing resemblance to the game which I used to love.

Referee's decision used to be final!
