The debate of the colour of a referee kit
« on: Thu 10 Nov 2022 22:58 »
I hate to be that guy…

However who actually decides what colour the officials were? Prime example was last night

West Ham v Blackburn - both teams in their traditional home kit, goalkeepers in black and dark green.

So what does the referee were… black?? Why not Yellow which would have been the common sense option

If someone has her way YELLOW would be banned altogether and i tend to agree lol.

Agree with you the colours worn by match officials on certain occasions do tend to be close clashes with players, especially goalkeepers.

Yellow is NEVER the common sense option, it is always the wrong option.

That said it depends on which league the match is, the PL the referee has a pretty graphic with home team shirt and goalie shirt on the left and away team shirt and goalie shirt on the right and in the middle is the referees shirt and they are told what colour to wear. That arrives with the appointment email. One referee who shall remain nameless ignored a wear yellow twice to my knowledge, swapping to purple one game last season and blue one game this season.

I believe in the football league they’re still considered to be big boys and girls and are trusted to make their own choice. That could have been changed by now, certainly for SG2.

At UEFA level they are told what to wear but the final decision is made at the security meeting on the morning of the game when the various kits get laid out on a table together.

As an aside 3 foreign FIFA refs have texted me photos of the kit laid out along with a screenshot of the email telling them to wear yellow and have stepped out in red. I am officially more scary than you Mr Rosetti - take note!!

Never ceases to amaze me that these guys spend 15/20 odd years working their way to the top and choosing their own kit colour only to reach the top and get treated like toddlers by being told what to wear!! 🤷‍♀️

I hate yellow, I think it’s absolutely vile! It gives me a headache.

I don’t mind if in Mother Nature but I hate it on clothes, furniture, wallpaper - anything man made!

At the risk if coming across as a grumpy old(ish) man, where has this nonsense about the referee and the goal-keeper having to have different shirt colours come from.

I get that it is possible for the referee to be confused with an outfield player but its never going to happen with a goal-keeper.  One of the reasons for this is that the referee rarely goes into the penalty area and the goal-keeper rarely leaves it.  In addition, the specialist role of the goal-keeper further reduces the already miniscule changes of any confusion.

If we can get rid of this make-believe rule, then the number of shirt colours needed can be reduced and - perhaps - yellow need no longer be seen?

Thank you for explaining that - did not realize one could dislike a colour that much!!!!!

Obviously should be custard, regardless of the weather!

Kits thing is really basic. And if someone is producing a match sheet with it already decided (guess to avoid officials carrying 4/5 kits or up to 10 if want a choice of sleeve length?), they’re not doing a good job, as it’s frequently wrong. If it’s the refs themselves, I equally can’t see how they keep picking the technically-wrong one live on the day.

Oh for the good old days when clubs weren’t allowed to wear colours which clashed with the referee’s black kit

Apple crumble is lush! Always ice cream though, no matter how cold it is. If no ice cream then cream will do. Not a fan of custard, nothing to do with the colour of it but the taste and texture - yuk.

I seem to recall at one point in the distant mists of time that goalkeepers could only wear yellow if they had played for England?

“ In 1921, the International Football Association Board (IFAB) decreed that international goalkeepers would wear yellow”

I dont have a problem with sides wearing black/dark kits but please follow the laws of the game where a referee will wear a kit that "distinguishes them from all players". We have enough colours to choose from.

Interesting in FL games referees rarely wore black with Southend's home kit, yet in NL the officials have no choice (same I would imagine with Notts C and Grimsby)
