Swansea v Fulham - Jarred Gillett
« on: Tue 08 Mar 2022 21:53 »
Swansea, especially their manager, very unhappy with Gillett over the red card shown towards the end of the first half. The Swansea manager was also cautioned towards the end for his protestations.

With no footage to hand as yet, it would be interesting to hear from our Fulham correspondents on the decision.

Once again Jarred Gillett was excellent, calm and almost anonymous overall.

From the live stream, I fully expected the yellow card for the challenge so was shocked to see the red appear, but from the replays and this picture from BBC, you cannot argue with a red card.  https://ichef.bbci.co.uk/onesport/cps/800/cpsprodpb/8048/production/_123604823_shutterstock_editorial_12839076af.jpg (am I allowed to do that, apologies if I'm not)

Even the Swansea City TV commentators agreed that "you see these given".

I’ve not seen it as I was partaking of the Bournemouth game on the red button.

Doesn’t mean anything. I’ll make a judgement when I’ve seen the video highlights

ajb- The pic shows
Black player is off the ground and possibly jumping.
White player sliding in foot also off the ground
White player's leg is straight and braced
Point of contact is studs to the ankle.  Force here is not a factor due to contact point.

This is a red card in football today. This is what football expects.

Fair enough, I await your judgement once you've seen it (maybe this works? https://twitter.com/i/status/1501302114429005829

Clear red card. Real time doesn't look nice and the replays just confirm it.

Just seen a replay at full speed and can understand why a red was given. It was high, with studs showing and it didn’t look good. Just my opinion! The one thing I will say is that Gillett was in a very good position about three or four yards away looking straight at it, and made a very quick decision as is his style, which I like.

Of course, if a decision goes against your side, the ref is either useless or a cheat, or both. I even read a Twitter comment advocating that the ref’s leg gets broken! Sadly this is the world we live in now where a guy gets a threat for doing his job.

For me, Gillett made a gutsy call and stuck with it. To the Swansea fans, tough cheese.

Gillett was absolutely fantastic yet again. He is a top level referee and should be getting the very best games in the Prem, he is undoubtedly that good.
That red for the Swansea player perhaps looked a tad harsh as it happened, not many expected a red, but Jarred showed all his ability and spotted it for what it was. Once you see the replay it is 100% a red. To give that decision against the home team in a hostile environment proved unequivocally that he has got balls and class. It would’ve been easy to shirk that decision, give a yellow, and he could’ve got away with that. But he knew what he’d seen and gave the correct punishment. Fair play to him, top, top ref.

Nailed on SFP. From what I have seen these type of tackles are not punished consistently by referees in the English game where I think the tolerance level for SFP is too high IMO compared with the current laws and guidelines.

Gillett here has produced a RC within three seconds of the challenge going in. He was in an excellent position (generally one of his weaknesses) and he displayed strong confident body language. Very good refereeing.

Correct red card decision. Time for him to be moved up into the higher bandings of the PL
