Stuart Attwell Man Utd vs Reading

Half time so far however Good teamwork by Attwell his AR Darren Cann  and VAR officials Moss and Child that resulted in a Utd penalty ( correctly ) I think Attwell is starting to relax and seems to display authoritative body language so far so good by the officials

Good solid confident performance by Attwell and his team wasn’t the most challenging game but he refereed well what was in front of him

Attwell is another example of a referee who relies solely on VAR and fails to award a penalty without it. There have been many examples on recent months with referees being reluctant to punish infractions because they know that VAR will fix everything.

Honestly, if this is the trend with VAR, I don't like it.

Not sure Attwell could see the foul edy , I didn’t think penalty at first because I was watching the ball only after seeing a replay did I see the trip

In fairness, there might have been an ambiguity about at exactly what point the offside was being penalised - I presume that is why Attwell went to speak to Cann.

I don't think Attwell made the VAR signal when the penalty was given so I think he might have made that decision anyway.

I prefer the trend of referees getting decisions correct to getting them wrong!

Surprised (in a way) to see Keith Hackett and Glenn Turner suggesting that offside should have been given.

Turner's view seems to be that as the touch from Mata came first Fred should have been penalised as being offside but I would disagree with that because I don't think Fred has committed any offside offence at the time of the foul and Mata might even have got the ball himself if he hadn't been fouled.

Hackett's view seems to be that Lukaku committed an offence which I think could possibly be supported although generally I wouldn't expect it to be penalised.

Even as a Reading fan, I thought penalty was the correct decision.

Still thinks he lacks confidence in his own ability. Will always seek assurance that he has made the correct decision. He did well to return a second time but is a little above his ability. Unfortunately his powers to be sponsors don’t agree.
