An excellent cup tie with five goals and a dramatic finish,’played in front of a sparse crowd on a freezing night.

Match notable for a fine piece of officiating by first season EFL referee Thomas Kirk. He produced a red card for a Dagenham player and the replay proved what a good decision it was. The foul was late, knee height and with studs showing. The man on the receiving end could have been seriously injured.

Mr. Kirk was straight on the spot, had no doubt and out came the appropriate punishment. Good to see a quick, decisive judgment and one that no one can quibble with.

I only saw the second half but from what I saw, Mr. Kirk did very well, especially with the sending off. RC all day. Even the offender didn't protest, which speak volumes for the decision! Mr. Kirk looked fit with a really good sprint near the end of the match to keep up with play for the break leading to the final Gillingham goal.
