Good to hear that Anthony had a good game Scally Bob. Talking about returning to Manchester by Ryanair, it somewhat surprised me that Anthony was in charge of a game in the same group as Man Utd. OK, nothing riding on it from the MU point of view, but that presumably would not have been known when AT was appointed (prior to MU's draw v Young Boys). No suggestion whatsoever of anything untoward, just a bit surprised.

Man United were already guaranteed to qualify before this round, so I guess this is why it was allowed.

It was known before - Manchester United had already won the group before this week's games, because of head to head record. Taylor wouldn't have been apppointed to the game if there was a potential impact on a team from his country.

I doubt UEFA would have put any English referee in charge of the game if the result was likely to affect Manchester United. I’m surprised how often Anthony Taylor referees both Manchester clubs and I’m continually having to defend his integrity to people I know. We know referees don’t care who wins but lots of supporters take some convincing. It’s only in recent seasons that Mike Dean has refereed both Merseyside clubs in the Premier League and I always thought it was strange that the FA weren’t prepared for many years to appoint him. His support for Tranmere is as well known as Taylor’s for Altrincham.

They changed the appointing rules a few years ago from postcode based to who referees declare they support.  I'm pretty sure Mike Dean had refereed Liverppol and Everton, but there was then a complaint when got appointed to a cup final with Liverpool in it and they, completely wrongly in my opinion, removed him from the game.

Yes, I think the 2006 FA Cup final was pivotal moment.

I remember Mike Dean saying a few years after that he'd been offered subsequent Liverpool/Everton appointments but had turned them down because if he wasn't trusted to do the FA Cup final, why should he be trusted to do any game?

He did say he hoped to referee a Merseyside derby one day, which he's now done several times.

Removing Mike Dean from that FA Cup Final was one of the more lily-livered actions by the FA, among a whole host of examples. People in positions of leadership need to lead, not be swayed by every grumble from their constituency. Listen of course, be sensitive to needs certainly, but not indulge in craven responsibility shirking.

On another topic. Off to The Valley today and my first sighting of Benjamin Speedie.  I will report back.
