First of all the comments by Austin are a disgrace and he should have the book thrown at him! Obviously what Mark Hughes said you wouldn’t expect anything different from him.
All I can say is that it’s a terrible decision. First by AR Lennard and then Hooper who has a clear view of the incident- baffling!
What gets me miffed as well with the post match reactions From saints personnel is that at 1-0 Watford are denied a clear penalty which could have been a red card as well. So to say they would have won 2-0 is totally incorrect!
We won’t be seeing much of Hooper if he carries on in this vein!

I agree with everything you say after the opening sentence but the comment about Charlie Austin being a disgrace who should have the book thrown at him had me wondering if you are a Pompey fan. Apologies of you aren't but they interviewed him straight after the game when emotions were still raw and he had every right to be angry. Lets be honest he wasn't exactly spreading fake news because between them the officials had an absolute shocker.

I can only agree that Hooper's performance was way short of what is required at that level.  He should be having a 'holiday' after that, and there needs to be serious consideration of his suitability to officiate at that level.

With regard to Austin's comments, I wonder whether those slagging him off actually listened to what he said.  Yes, he was very critical of the officials, but that is understandable, especially moments after the final whistle.  But his real point was that VAR would have resolved the issue and it's about time we had it as officials need all the help they can get.  He may have been angry, but he made the point perfectly well.

You're absolutely right about Austin, but it's often a standard response on here to say something like "Throw the book at him" instead of listening to what he's actually said.

Any book-throwing should be at Lennard, Hooper and the people who have elevated him to a position he really isn't good enough for.

If that was a manager saying those things they would get a fine and a ban! Yes it was the heat of the moment but no player has ever reacted like that in a post match interview!

If Watford get that penalty at 1-0 this incident never happens. Is VAR just an excuse for poor officiating or poor officials? Hooper shouldn’t be in the PL but it’s basic refereeing that anyone should be getting right!

It’s a valid point about the Watford penalty, so what Austin says is factually debatable. Can’t blame him feeling aggrevied about the chalked off goal though and he won’t have been the first to make injudicious comment after a perceived injustice on the pitch.

I know am in a minority on here, but now we have professional referees, they should be required to make themselves available for interview in the same way as managers and players post match.

Whatever Austin may think, had Watford had the penalty to me he has to yellow card Bertrand who already had one by that stage and there is no way Southampton could have played like that with 10 men. Quite clear from MOTD Hooper got a message from his Assistant and he wasn't experienced enough or had some other reason, not to over rule him.

Would they be allowed to point out mistakes made by players and poor tactical moves from the managers ?

Along with all the attempts to try and deceive the referee during the game, all the incidents of ill discipline etc. Bring it on - I suspect it would be a very long interview in many cases!

What specific comments did you have an issue with? From what I've seen, I do not see anything that questions the integrity of the match officials. His main point, expressed in a tone of frustration, seemed to be that officials needed extra help to stop them making match-changing errors.

So youre ok with the officials being called a joke. "costing us the game" seems to me as though it is questioning his integrity?! You might disagree

As far as I'm aware he said 'it's a joke' which isn't necessarily directly aimed at the officials - perhaps if he'd said 'Simon Hooper is a joke' I'd have agreed with you (obviously not with Austin...)

I don't think the comment about costing them the game is questioning their integrity personally - it is just saying that the bad decision contributed to them not winning the game. You could argue with that based on the fact Watford should have had a penalty but I don't think it's suggesting any form of possible bias or lack of even-handedness/professional conduct which to me is what questioning a referee's integrity is.

An interesting point. Personally, I'd have no problem with it, but for obvious reasons it could end up making a referee's life harder. However, if they were able to answer questions about refereeing issues that cropped up in a game, it could help to de-mystify things and give a wider understanding of the difficulties encountered in doing their job.

The issue would inevitably be that the media would selectively edit the interviews to meet their purposes.  Also, whilst some referees are media friendly some are most definitely not, and then there is the issue that anything they say could be used to claim "subjudice" for any disciplinary hearings.  Not too dissimilar to the media interviewing a witness to a crime who then has to give evidence in court, it would almost certainly rule the evidence inadmissible.

He dared get emotional and angry at an incorrect decision that cost him and his team a goal and a possible 3 points .
He never swore , he never questioned the referees integrity he was just very angry (unsurprisingly) called the decision a joke (which it was ) and said the officials cost his team 3 points ( which is nearly right as it definitely cost his team a chance of 3 points.) if Austin is charged I think it would be a travesty.

On the plus side, wonderful campaigning for VAR from the wretched Hooper.
What the players and managers keep forgetting, it was their bosses (the clubs) that voted to delay VAR for a season - they didn't think it was well enough advanced to perform with their required level of accuracy.

Additionally, if VAR is to be used, that means another 6/7 suitable standard levels not being able to referee. Would this the recently retired? or SG2 referees (less experienced that the referee in the middle) doing the role? They woudl also not be refereeing, so EFL is using less experienced referees - so the problem is just moved down a level.

On the point of referees talking to the media - if they received the same media training and remuneration as the managers (say £1.5M pa), then I would say yes. As it stands - NO. Do the club put up players to ask them with they missed a penalty / open goal ? - NO

As a first step , the Brighton player (Dale Stephens) should do a media interview on why he did that challenge. If the players have to explain their mistakes, then perhaps the referees should as well.

Re-invigorated his waning career. People have heard of him again.

Seriously, you're right. Other than his mathematical oversight (the joke decision probably cost them two points) it's difficult to fault what he said.

According to the Times, VAR could be agreed for next season at a meeting (which will include a presentation by PGMOL) this Thursday. The case of Austin and Hooper has been cited.
