SG assistant referees
« on: Sat 23 Mar 2019 18:27 »
Whilst there is a lot of discussion on here about the merits or otherwise of SG1 (and often SG2) referees, there tends not to be such a specific focus on assistant referees, aside from when a particularly good/bad decision by an assistant is commented upon.

Whilst I know a fair bit about the individual referees, I know less about many of the assistants - I would probably be unable to name all of the SG1 assistants for example. I have admired the excellence of Darren Cann for a long time and there are a few others, such as Scott Ledger, who generally strike me as being reliable (not to say the rest aren't!)

What do you think of the current quality of the SG assistants? Who would you consider to be amongst the best and who are you less convinced by?

I would say Simon Bennett, Daniel Robathan, Sian Massey-Ellis and Edward Smart are the strongest from the games I've seen.

The only 2 who I don't rate are Constantine Hatzidakis and Harry Lennard.

I think amongst the best are Eddie Smart ,Dan Cook ,  Sian Massey Ellis , Scott Ledger and Darren Cann , middle I would say Burt , Bennett , Child and Perry , I think at the end of the season we will lose Garrett and Kirkup

Hatzidakis tended to be a bit "busy" when on Football League lines and Harry Lennard is never more than a flag wave away from a disaster.

Mention to Ian Hussin. Don’t personally rate Marc Perry or Simon Bennett or Andy Halliday but that’s just me.

Agree re Halliday, consistently poor at tight (and sometimes not so tight) offside judgements.

Great idea for a thread

Darren Cann was the best I've ever seen in any competition, lost it a bit after he came off FIFA imo but still better than most. Also like Smart, Beswick, Bennett, Ledger (amazing hes never been FIFA) and Child.

Have never seen the brilliance others do in Sian Massey-Ellis, solid PL assistant but no more atm for me, lots of time to develop though.

Regarding Scott Ledger, I was looking at the list of officials who have done the FA Cup final and his name didn't seem to be on there - has his face not always 'fitted' for whatever reason?

I Agree with the comments regarding Darren Cann and also regarding Scott who has been very consistent over a number of seasons. I beleive a glaring ommission when previous contributors are nominating the best assistants has to be Adrian Holmes. He has made some very brave tight calls and his accuracy percentage is extremely high. He has also shown he is prepared to assist when it comes to other incidents besides off sides. He has had some critisism from pundits on occassions for being "only just right" but we all know how stupid some of them are. For me he is way better than some of our other asstistants including FIFA badge holders over the last couple of seasons. Interesting that the powers that be put out Holmes and Ledger with Paul Teirney on Saturday following the Manchester City Watford game, obviously they thought he would be well looked after !!

To be fair, Tierney was looked after perfectly well by his assistant in the Man City V Watford game - he just chose to overrule!

That was my point, same assistant that tried his best to keep him [ the ref] out of trouble in his previous game.

Does anyone have any views on likely names to be promoted to the SG1 assistant list from Sg2 in the near future.

Running him close for the "best lino" award would certainly have been Gavin Ward, had he not decided to become a very average referee instead.

I've not seen Simon Beck appointed to a game for a while but he is still on the list for this season?

I'm surprised Andrew Garratt has continued this season considering it was announced in summer 2018 that he was retiring!

Three offside decisions have been overturned by VAR so far this season.
