Serious Foul Play
« on: Thu 03 Jan 2019 07:21 »
Whilst catching up with the EFL games and keeping an eye on the Prem text reports I was wondering how the game can "tackle" the number of horrible challenges we are seeing. I think I counted half a dozen high, lunging, scissor swiping tackles (or equivalent), studs raised with straight legs etc. On NYD the majority were correctly sanctioned but this does not appear to be acting as a prevention. Scary the fact that fellow professionals are willing to make such tackles. How long before we see a career threatening injury?
Havent seen MOTD yet but it sounds like there were at least 3 tackles of this ilk last night too

1 absolute shocker in the AFCB game - the tackle by Doucoure on Fraser was utterly disgraceful. Quite how Coote thought it was only a yellow is beyond me! Doucoure gave him at least 2 more opportunities to right that by giving him a 2nd yellow but... Dreadful, late tackle by Gosling as well, another red card missed. I do feel that he would have gone had Coote got the Doucoure decision correct. There's no deterrent when the likes of Coote just give a yellow.

Off topic but was there a situation where the referee could have shown 2 YCs to Deeney against AFCB?

Deeney clearly pulled the Bournemouth player's shirt (1st YC  - advantage played as the player got free) and then a couple of strides later Deeney then takes him out with a bad tackle from behind (2nd YC)? They were clearly 2 different offences.

In my opinion naive refereeing. There was never any advantage coming after the pull back. Stop the game, caution Deeney. He virtually allowed him a free hack.
Hard to sell 2 cautions, even if it is technically correct

Possibly.  As an afcb supporter I was ok with just the yellow for both to be honest, reasonable enough advantage played initially, especially as wee man was the player.  In the context of what had been allowed and what the referee saw as only a yellow card offence, I think we're lucky he even got the 1!

In terms of missed Red cards, although perhaps not quite as clear-cut in the view of some, I would add Kompany's challenge on Salah for which Anthony Taylor only gave a YC to those missed by Coote and Marriner.

Recognising SFP and dealing with it correctly is an important issue that seems to crop up periodically in the PL.  I remember writing to Keith Hackett years ago when he was in charge of PGMOL about specific incidents that had occurred over a short period and he was surprisingly candid in his response.

I agree.  There has been a real spate of these tackles over the past few days.  Could it be down to tiredness on the part of players who (as usual) have been subjected to a higher than usual workload over the Christmas and New Year period?
