I remember him as being one of the referees that made me want to take up the whistle, was always impressed watching him referee.

Always struck me as really unfair that his career was effectively ended by missing one really bad challenge, think it was on Dennis Irwin from memory.  It was a really bad challenge, but that was back in the day when they were routinely not sanctioned as SFP.

Yes, such was his fall he pretty much went into obscurity for the remainder of his FiFA career.  The only time I recall seeing him following that was when he refereed the Italy vs England friendly in November 2000 which was his final match on the list.  He was certainly an impressive referee in the mid nineties.

I was sorry to learn of his death at a relatively early age and extend my sympathies to his family and friends.

However, I can't let rustyref's comments go without emphasising just how bad a challenge on Irwin it was, and I actually was pleased that UEFA took the strong action they did for failing in his duty to protect players. I suspect in part it may have been because when asked by UEFA why he hadn't sent the offender off, there were reports that Puhl was rather arrogant about it and wouldn't accept he'd made a mistake, saying only grudgingly it was perhaps worth a yellow card.  There was no indication he had not seen the incident. This was a piece from Independent. ie on
4 Dec'1997.

Soccer round-upSANDOR PUHL, the referee who failed to punish Feyenoord's Paul Bosvelt for his appalling tackle on Denis Irwin in the Champions' League match in Rotterdam last month, has been barred from taking charge of further European club matches this season.
This unprecedented action, effectively striking off a referee for negligence, came yesterday from the UEFA referees' committee after it studied reports of the blatant kick on Irwin.
Feyenoord substituted Bosvelt while Irwin was treated for ligament damage that may keep him out until Christmas

A UEFA statement said: ``Sandor Puhl, who failed to inflict the appropriate sanction, will not be assigned any UEFA matches this season.''
The European governing body fell short of punishing the perpetrator.

However, UEFA's response is a brave one given the status of Puhl, who refereed the 1994 World Cup final, the 1996 European championship final and the World Cup play-off between Australia and Iran in Melbourne last Saturday.

Prior to that, Puhl was very much a referee I respected and enjoyed watching but I have to confess that sometimes a particular incident can change my view of a referee.  It also happened with Roger Milford who I loved seeing referee games until his Cup Final when, like Puhl imo, he failed in his duty to protect players by not sending off Gascoigne in the Cup Final.

Whether one should be so influenced by a particular incident is another matter but that was my reaction to both those referees.
I'm sorry if this doesn't sit well with those who feel differently about Sandor Puhl or who consider the remarks inappropriate at this time.

Oh I can remember it and I know how bad it was, but I'm also off the opinion that no one decision, no matter how bad, should kill off a referee's career.  Perhaps his reaction to it didn't help his cause if what you have said was correct.

Totally agree.
If that is the case though then we will be bidding farewell to Taylor and Dean at the end of the season after their recent performances

The action by UEFA though was limited. "Puhl....will not be assigned any UEFA matches this season.'' and that was 1997/98. It was not a career ban and as far as I know he remained a FIFA referee until 2000.  If he didn't get many matches after the 97/98 season, there may have been other reasons.

I should add that Bosvelt, the offender, did apologise to Irwin, saying he didn't realise how bad the tackle was until he saw the replay later on tv.

He refereed Australia v Iran World Cup qualification playoff 3 weeks after the Feyenoord game, followig season 98/99 he did a Euro qualifier, UEFA Cup match and last 16 match in the UEFA cup winners cup in 99/00 he did 3 UEFA cup matches, a UEFA cup qualifier & 1 international friendly. He announced his retirement at the end of the spring season. At the start of 00/01 he was given an official retirement match in the NBI and then the Italy v England friendly in the November. Despite having retired he remained on the FIFA list officially for a further 7 months.
