S HOOPER: FOREST V MAN UTD
« on: Sun 16 Apr 2023 16:53 »
Corner comes in from Forest, Maguire misjudged the flight of the ball and it lands directly on his arm and then is cleared. Gary Neville said definite penalty and I agree with him. Following a lengthy enough VAR check it was said No. Incorrect call IMO.

Looked clear and this is the problem with var, you can excuse the ref for missing it but when you have unlimited replays that’s got to be given

Like previous posts I am currently at a loss as to what handball is and isn't.  I was fully expecting Hooper to at least look at the monitor, but nothing is given.

This is the problem with Howard Webb having a "high bar" for VAR involvement - we saw this in the shambles in the Tottenham v Brighton match.

Hooper has been his usual exceptional self on field. There was no way he was going to see the handball, a poor decision by Madley is going to overshadow Hoopers performance and the game if United only win by one goal.

Roy Keane and Jimmy Floyd Hasselbank have also said it should've been a pen "they couldn't have complained if it was given".

Had he been stood alone I think it would have been given.  Because he is in a crowd of players who are jostling for space I'd say there is an argument his arm was in a natural position for the activity he was doing.

I place no blame on Simon hooper who I rate highly , but it’s yet another example of var being unfit for purpose, it was introduced for precisely this type of incident, if those operating it do not have the bottle or competence to flag up these incidents then there is no point in its existence. But it’s ok Howard will apologise in the morning and that will make it right .

I think that arm was more unnatural than Antonio's was in the West Ham game.  Being honest, in my world, neither would be penalties but in the world we're living in now and the way referees are being told to interpret handball both should be given.  It's more subjective than the decisions at Spurs last weekend but I'm very surprised he wasn't summoned.  Also on Maguire was good he didn't wimp out the early yellow because it was early.

If there is no way that a top official can identify a handball without VAR assistance, isn't it time that the relevant Law (and/ or it's interpretation) was reviewed. At the level I watch I usually see a handball incident each game, yet for a referee to give a penalty would usually involve a degree of guesswork .  Football is not just for the Leagues that can afford VAR.

Perhaps a controversial opinion but I would actually place Hooper as only just behind Michael Oliver this season. If merit had anything to do with the FA Cup final appointment, his can be the only name on it in my opinion!

Which probably 100% guarantees that he will not get it.   I'll guess we'll know in about a week's time.

He looks so much fitter, younger and healthier compared to what he was. His refing has come on with that as well. He should be very proud of himself.
