Roy Hodgson CBE

Without wishing to rake up any controversy about the honours system, may I congratulate Roy Hodgson on the award of a CBE in the Queen's Birthday honours list. Call me biased if you like, but if ever an individual deserved an honour 'for services to football', Roy was the man.

Fully deserved. And if he had been a wealthy donor to the Tory Party or some relatively unknown long-serving backbench toady who always towed the party line it would have been “Sir Roy” for sure!

Will always have a strong love by fans at FFC for what he did for us with the great escape and the Europa league final he led us to.

Fully deserved.

I hadn’t heard about this but if winning the equivalent of the Northern Premier League in Sweden forty years ago, being absolutely clueless at Internazionale and Liverpool before failing to get out of a World Cup group with Costa Rica in it then managing England to get knocked out by Iceland is footballing genius it’s fully deserved.

(Edited personal insults not allowed at ALL) who waffles on about his forty-odd-year career but in the same category as Pulis, Warnock or Allardyce and has never won anything of significance.

That’s before considering the Honours System that ignored the greatest English manager of all time and Brian Clough’s achievements at Forest.

That comment has no evidence to back it up and just smacks of a disgruntled Liverpool fan from his time there.  He won the title in his first season at Halmstad, the year before he came in they had only escaped relegation on goal difference.  Five consecutive league championships at Malmo, and took Switzerland to their first World Cup since 1966, getting out of a group including Italy and Portugal.  Took Inter Milan to a UEFA Cup final, and then took a Blackburn team that had battled relegation the previous season to a 6th place finish and European qualification.

A bit later he went to Copenhagen who hadn't finished in the top six in the past two seasons and immediately won the league.  Then comes, after a few other roles, Fulham who he tool over in dire relegation trouble but kept them up, then the next season 7th in the Premier League and UEFA League qualification.  The following season he took lowly Fulham to a UEFA League final which was an amazing achievement.

OK, it didn't work at Liverpool, but he again rescued a relegation troubled West Brom and stabilised them, and then did the same at Palace.  England came in between West Brom and Palace, and I would agree he wasn't the right man for that job, but that doesn't mean that he hasn't been an amazing servant to football and had some amazing achievements.

Describing someone who took Fulham to a European final as an "absolute bluffer" just shows a complete understanding of football.

Well this post could never be reasonably accused of 'sitting on the fence' though I find ad hominem attacks regrettable and unappealing.

As a fellow Liverpool fan I always take great interest in your posts but this one is uncalled for and in very bad taste. I like to go by the old adage..... "If you have nothing good to say, say nothing at all"

If everyone adopted that 'old adage', there would be no purpose in this forum, which is all about opinions.

I am fairly ambivalent about Hodgson's career, it seems he had good and bad times as you would expect.  However, I fail to see any relevance in the ludicrous honours system which I have always regarded as a collection of worthless trinkets for the great and the good.

......and sometimes the not so great and not so good I would say. There is a list one can look up, how accurate I could not say, of those who have turned down Honours. I think that is a list I would aspire to join but as I never have been offered an Honour and am frankly never likely to be, I think my chances of doing so are pretty non-existent.

With you all the way (apart from the typo in the last sentence) ...... until you described him as a servant to football.

He life has been a diversely rich one, embracing numerous nationalities and cultures. He has been massively remunerated, by normal people's standards. He has done well in football and has done well out of football.
That's not how servitude normally works.
