Rob Jones Newcastle v Leicester
« on: Sun 03 Jan 2021 14:52 »
Three times he has had to stop play in the first half due to the ball hitting him and changing possession

Don't think I've ever seen it happen 3 times in a game never mind a first half

I noticed that as well - something you don’t usually see in the PL!!!

He's had more touches than the Newcastle forwards ..!

Don't think there is much wrong with his positioning, just a bit of freakish bad luck.

The way Schmeichel has just charged towards Jones after Newcastle’s goal is disgusting - especially when the fault lies entirely with his defender for playing the attacker onside and not getting out quick enough. Why the hell is this accepted behaviour in football!?!?

It shouldn't be accepted, however, it depends who is doing it.
Why did Harvey Barnes not get a caution for pulling Almiron back in the first half ---because he is one of the medias' 'golden boys' , just as Jack Grealish gets away with all sorts, including a foul and abusive volley at an AR yesterday because he didn't get his way but which players from other teams receive a caution.
Referee's decision used to be final!

I have just posted on the fifa badge subject as I wasn’t aware that one had been started here. Imho he is at the moment struggling to justify a SG1. Apart from keeping getting hit by the ball, mainly down to poor positioning. Very one paced. So for people who are bigging him up. I think he is really struggling to make the jump to the PL. So any thoughts of fifa are and should be a long long way off

Better than last week, but not entirely convincing.  Being hit by the ball 3 times, and numerous near misses would suggest his positioning needs a bit of work.  Given all the hype about him prior to his promotion, I am a little disappointed in what I have seen so far, but hopefully as he settles, he will improve.  Of the 2 promotions, Darren England has impressed me more so far.

I thought he had a good game, aside from the ball hitting him I can't think of much wrong.  He does look a bit laboured but I think that is down to his sheer size, and bigger referees do tend to look a bit "lumbering", similar to Andre Marriner.

Happens to the best of them as well as Anthony Taylor just got hit by the ball as well.  Patterns of play are very different in the Premier League to the Championship and it may well be that Jones is still trying to get used to that.  There's a lot more central passing and playing through the middle of the pitch so it will undoubtedly affect positioning.  I remember when I refereed PL and FL reserve games, I always felt like I was getting in the way and had to remember to stay still and let the players work around me, if I'd done that in a Ryman league game I would undoubtedly have been in the way.

I'd agree rustyref, I thought he had a decent game. Getting hit by the ball was unfortunate and adds extra visibility you don't want but I would agree with your assessment of it, not a major issue.

On the whole he does strike me as ever so slightly uncomfortable still which is perfectly understandable given his lack of experience at this level. I must say I am not yet seeing why there was such a fuss about him in the Championship but I'm sure his class will shine through eventually once he gets the proper coaching and experience.

One thing I definitely think he should change - occasionally he makes an almost sneering expression when talking to players, sort of a "oh come on what are you on about" look. Maybe its just me but it rubbed me up the wrong way slightly and I think gave across a slightly aloof feeling. I'm really nit picking though, I think he can be happy enough overall with todays game and I wish him continued success.

DublinRef ---many thanks for your last paragraph, I thought that it was just me who noticed this tendency. It certainly gives the impression of arrogance and is something which will rile many fans who just don't need an excuse to get upset!

Thanks to you Ashington - I was beginning to think it was something I was judging incorrectly. I do think it is something Mr. Jones should try to change it, I have never met him and I'm sure he's a perfectly humble fellow but this particular facial expression does not give one that feeling! Just goes to show how you have to really analyse everything under the microscope of the PL, its not a task I envy in that sense.  (Although I guess by pointing out this particular 'indiscretion' out I'm not helping  ;D)

Rob, being a Cheshire Referee like myself is a guy I have come across quite often on his journey this far.

I must say that I don't recall having seen him look so nervous as he has in the past two televised games.

Possibly this is down to him having achieved SG1 status possibly not.

Apart from being hit 3 times I didn’t see much wrong with his display today maybe consistency with the yellows. However what I don’t get is, the Wilson penalty shout he judged that as a penalty with Pope last week however he doesn’t give it this time! Is that because it was a defender  and not a keeper?

Phil - as someone who might have more insight than the rest of us, do you rate Jones as 'one for the future' in terms of PL and FIFA refereeing?

Some interesting comments above.  Anticipating the pattern of play comes with experience in the PL I guess, but I did think he was too close to the action on occasions.  I'd noted in games earlier this season that the likes of Taylor and Oliver seem very adept at a hop, skip, and a jump to avoid the ball if they've found themselves in the way or caught out with an unexpected pass that switched play.  Ironic that Taylor should be struck by the ball today.

As to 'lumbering', I imagine he takes pretty long strides so perhaps that mitigates against the fast sprints that some smaller referees require.

Curious that DublinRef refers to his looking a little 'aloof'.  In his previous game I felt that his manner / body language showed a hint of arrogance but I didn't like to comment at the time as I put it down to perhaps a touch of nerves or not being totally relaxed.

Overall though, I thought he did ok today and hope he continues to improve and settle in the PL.
