Bobby Madden, who some of you may know from his work as a referee in the SPL, has recently relocated to England due to his work commitments. As he transfers from the Scottish FA, he will join the National Group of referees for the 2022/23 season.

He has achieved/officiated pretty much everything there is to do up here, and in many cases multiple times over.  Regardless of how much progress he makes in England (and he’s only 43, so you’d hope he has some scope for progression) it’s a great opportunity to experience so many more games, teams, stadiums, and competitions.  It will be very interesting to see how he gets on.

He’s not the first to have done it in recent years, with Ivan Stankovic (former Scottish SAR) making the move down south a few seasons ago.

Joe Timmons in the 1980’s moved with his bank to Newcastle and refereed (excellently in my opinion) in the FL.
Then he vanished north of the border again

Always thought friend was never more than average - same with Moss, but losing 4 reds if their experience who could all take charge of a big top 6 game or Derby, is leaving massive holes in SG1.
And due to poor leadership and mismanagement, the likes of Attwell, Coote & Madley haven’t been given enough exposure to some of these games.

Hopefully they will this season and England and Bankes can join them in that regard

Good luck to him, but I am curious as to how many management positions the PGMOL have, or is it a way of keeping them on the books beacuse they cant get rid of them.

Am I right in saying that Atkinson, Moss and now friend have now got other roles, along with Mason, who did these roles before?

I do think the whole management of the PGMOL is coming home to roost with the retirements and the lack of others being given opportunities to get game at this level, with Harrington and  others in the past being promoted and given few games.

The article states it's a newly created role so take from that what you want!

Friend will continue to work for PGMOL in the newly-created post of manager of the “Select Group 2” referees – those who take charge of games in the Championship.
Hajrá Lilák. Csak a Kispest. Hajrá Magyarok! Hajrá játékvezetői csapat! Soha ne add fel. Nincs sárga kérem!!! No Chris Kavanagh doesn't live in Ashton or even in the Greater Manchester area!!

I thought that was Mike Jones’s job? 🤷‍♀️😅

Too true, however, my question is:- In common with almost every other job going these days ---do you have to possess a degree to become a PGMOL manager ----or even to become a referee these days? If not ---why not?
Referee's decision used to be final!
