On match days match officials were expected to wear their issued blue suits and a blue shirt which they had to provide themselves together with regulation tie. A friend of mine, when he was officiating on the Football League, was once pulled up by a Match Observer who declared that his shirt was " mauve not blue "...and we wonder why the promotion system as administered by certain Observers produces surprising results !
