Hi, when the Referees and their assistants travel to officiate abroad, who pays their expenses?

They are paid a fee for the match, but the other costs (flights, hotel, other travel) is dealt with either centrally or by the home club.

Moving this on a stage, do our referees get an allowance for kit - boots, shorts, different coloured shirts - or is there some sort of sponsorship in place? Must be expensive for top flight officials to be up to date with their kit at all times. Thanks.

Certainly a couple of years ago ( and probably still the case ) I believe League referees were sent, gratis, a whole host of new kit at the beginning of a season, including their match day suits, anoraks etc. Most referees preferred to provide their own boots, going with makes and styles which suited them and were comfortable.

Boots aside, they get sent everything, as it ensures consistency of matchday wear, etc.

On match days match officials were expected to wear their issued blue suits and a blue shirt which they had to provide themselves together with regulation tie. A friend of mine, when he was officiating on the Football League, was once pulled up by a Match Observer who declared that his shirt was " mauve not blue "...and we wonder why the promotion system as administered by certain Observers produces surprising results !  ::)

In the early 00s the "deal" included boots and trainers but too many refs developed feet issues/ankle problems so this was ditched. Suits came in during that time also
