Rebecca Welch - Oxford v Sheffield Wednesday
« on: Fri 07 Apr 2023 23:45 »
I only just realised that Ms Welch’s game was live on tv today. That’s a shame as I would have watched this with interest given that I am yet to see her officiate in a live game as yet.

Did anybody see the game and can feed back on the performance? I have seen that the away side are not happy with a penalty kick but I am yet to see the incident

Agreed - I've seen the penalty given and that's very harsh. Darren Moore shares the same view too by the sounds of it.
Great appointment for Welch though!

I think the only thing you can say with confidence is that this is one of the most Bizarre penalty decisions you could ever imagine! It could never be deemed a penalty kick in a million years. There was a good shout for a penalty that could be awarded with credit earlier but the one awarded later did not tick any of the boxes, a very poor decision and hopefully a one off error by Walsh.

She should have given one penalty; she gave one penalty. It's a shame she didn't pick the right one but I guess it's not the least equitable possible outcome !

I watched the whole game live and I thought that overall, she did well. Generally good positioning and fitness, clear signals etc. The first of the two potential penalty kick incidents was subjective. It always strikes me as odd that when two players are entangled, it's always the attacker who goes to ground (looking for a penalty), rarely the defender. Call me cynical if you wish. As for the second incident, I would have awarded it. For me, the defender was on the ground, realised the attacker was chasing after the loose ball, so stood up to prevent him from doing so, bringing him down in the process. Some may think it harsh but I feel it was justified.

The only decision I didn't understand was the drop ball right at the end of the game. I'd love to know Ms. Welch's thinking behind that one.

I have to agree with Seagull I thought she did well. I too would have given it and I’m a Wednesday fan. Don’t understand what happened at the end though there was an Oxford player down holding his head. Typical of Wednesday we throw it away with poor errors. Stockdale should have held the shot and there is no penalty. Typical of a lot of Wednesdays fans on Facebook blame the ref every time but the errors that cost us lay firmly at the door of the players and the manager who I think is out of his depth and how we were unbeaten in all that time I don’t know.

I don't think it was a penalty, the attacker realised he couldn't get to the ball so flung himself into the back of the defender and went over.  Wednesday had got lucky though as Oxford definitely should have had a penalty for what can only be described as a rugby tackle earlier, and I think most referees would have given Vaulks a second yellow card just a minute after he picked up his first.  They certainly can't blame the referee.

As far as I can tell from various posts she has had a good season so far and survived very well , in comparison with every other referee who are all male - this must be overall good for the game and I look forward to the next female referee to be appointed whoever that might be
