Not only supporting my beloved local club Sunderland AFC but taking an interest in referees from the North East isn't it lovely to see what progress Rebecca Welch is making.

She seems to have handled the [ obvious ] scrutiny in her stride and has now been given a League One game as well as a FA Cup tie at St Andrews Birmingham.

Delighted for Rebecca and I hope there are more female referees are influenced to push themselves into the middle.

Ms Welch is certainly receiving remarkably good appointments for a first year referee on the Football League. I wonder if any of our many RTR correspondents have seen her officiate at this level and can report on her performances. Clearly they must be quite exceptionally good to receive such appointments so early on.

Her performance on Saturday was very much one of the best I’ve seen this season, she did get in a mess with her positioning in the first half and got in the way a couple of times but that said her control was superb she had no nonsense she was surprisingly spritely always on the spot but the best thing for me was the lack of fussing or attention seeking , she got on with the job and kept the match flowing nicely, deserved her appointment IMO.
My views are my own and not that of rate the ref .

I saw her first game of this season - Rochdale v Colchester - and thought she was very good. I also thought the players reacted differently/better with a female referee.

Surprised she's only done half a dozen Football League matches in the first half of the season.

I believe, though stand to be corrected, that Ms Welch also officiates at a very senior level in Women's football and so that would presumably limit her availability in the Football League. Both avenues must be open to referees now. Are there any male referees making a good name for themselves officiating in senior Women's football ? It must now be open for all referees to operate in such a dual way.

She's done a number of WC Qualifiers and Women's Champions League matches. I wonder whether as she still refs on the WSL if she has to do a certain number of games on the highest women's League to maintain her women's FIFA status?

Probably because she is still doing WSL games and wouldn't be allowed to do two games in a weekend.  Also different to all of the other EFL referees as will be away a lot on UEFA appointments.

I know of a few male referees looking to go along the female pathway.  But will they ever reach the top?  Of course not.. seen it over the past few seasons, up until the FA cup semi final male officials are on games, but then remarkably disappear when the semis are appointed to.

Further still a male referee who is a L3 referee cant referee a WSL game but they can do the line to a L3 female referee who can referee on the WSL.
