Reading - Middlesbrough Peter Bankes
« on: Sat 25 Sep 2021 14:17 »
I expect Mr. Warnock will be unhappy after this game and I think justifiably. For me not a red card offence. Yellow would be correct for me, not buying the commentators argument of "he had to go for that ball" so it can't be red as seems to be his view , I just think the contact doesn't constitute SFP. Free kick and YC for me, the reaction of the Reading players didn't help and I must admit on first viewing I thought he had caught him badly but, like Mr. Bankes, I was wrong.

Middlesbrough player has now pushed a member of the Reading medical staff. Not sure of the laws on this but for me they should be treated like the officials and this should be VC and a red card. Bankes went yellow and that could well be correct in law, I'm not sure.

Tough scene to handle that one with a player down and tempers high with lots of players in close quarters but Bankes didn't have fantastic control over it IMO.

Red card for Crooks was a very harsh decision, however, it was not the only strange decision which Mister Bankes made in this match and quite a number were against the Boro players.
Reading players were falling over with the slightest touch and were being awarded free kicks and one incident in the first half saw the Reading player chasing for a ball with the Boro player, the Reading player had hold of his opponent's shirt, he then let go and fell over, was awarded the free kck and the Boro player, Jones, was cautioned!

I watched this match in preference to the Chelsea v City game because I thought that there would be less falling over etc., ----how wrong I was!
Anyway, out now to watch a proper game in the FA Vase.
Referee's decision used to be final!

Shocking decision for the red card.  Sure, give a foul and perhaps a yellow.  But I do get sick to death of players falling down or rolling around to get opponents into trouble.  Far too many referees are falling for this nonsense at this level.

I sometimes despair at the standard of refereeing in SG2.  Having watched Eltringham plodding around and making random decisions in the Coventry v Peterborough game last night, there isn't much to persuade me of any improvement on the horizon.

There seems a sanctimonious problem when SG1 officials dive into the FL.

I haven’t seen/heard what Hooper was like for us today, but all too frequently when the top echelon of the refereeing fraternity are allocated an EFL match, they more often than not have absolute stinkers.

I’d be interested in other peoples thoughts on that. Am I way off the mark?

That said, Colin is a serial whinger and he certainly had the ammunition today to be vocal, but generally I don’t pay much attention to his constant ranting and raving.

I've often said similar and going way back to the L2 & L1 days. There are some exceptions - Andre Marriner, Craig Pawson, Simon Hooper at Dean Court (it seems to be his happy ground), Lee Probert, Stuart Attwell & Jon Moss I never minded. The rest of them I preferred not to have if they could be avoided!!

TBF I think Bankes's position wasnt the best - and therefore relied on an assistant who was much further from the incident. He should have taken control of the situation himself. For me no red card, and Bankes's position would back that up. But to then put the decision on the AR who is miles away is just incompetent refereeing IMO

And to be fair to him he did say that Bankes is normally a good referee and “had a bad day at the office” - plus he also said that Gillett was the best ref he’s seen this year and deserved his chance in the PL

Never a red card. I genuinely thought there was a chance of getting the ball. I agree with Warnock that studs were down, the arm around the ball was played. I diasgree, however, that Bankes' lack of recognition was down to "not having played". I think he had a poor angle and allowed himself to be influenced, which in itself is poor from a top flight referee

As predicted by most on this thread, the red card has been rescinded.
