The penalty shoot-out meant that the planned trip back home would have been rather tight, so JCFC remained  at the ground, passing the time with steak pie, chips and peas, while waiting for

Saturday 29th May 2021
Yorkshire Trophy Final
Penistone Church   0   v   4   Liversedge
Gareth Thomas, Jonathan Spencer, Gavin Hock.

Circumstances had forced Penistone to field a team with a slightly makeshift look. Liversedge continued with their policy of putting out a team of giants, with more arriving from the bench in the course of the match. Now, height does not necessarily equate to playing ability - I offer myself as proof of that - but it does have certain advantages and Liversedge took the lead with a header after just 5 minutes. Mr Thomas called a drinks break midway through the first half, but kept it to a limited time with an imperious whistle. In the closing minutes of the half Penistone broke clear, the keeper blocking for a corner and they followed shortly afterwards with a great move, sadly foiled by a very good save.

The result was all but certain just one minute into the second half, when the Church keeper could only parry a shot, leaving a simple tap-in. A foul by the Penistone number 3 on 55 minutes looked as if it was going to earn a card, but Mr Thomas settled for pointing out that there had better be no repeat. It was fortunate for the player that he did, as he subsequently did receive an indisputable yellow for an attack-stopper. From the free-kick, the ball was headed back into the danger area and an overhead kick gave Sedge their third. The fourth came in the closing minute, an unfortunate defender being left facing a posse of attackers and conceding a comical own-goal as he tried to effect a clearance.

It should be born in mind that Mr Thomas is one of only two referees to recognise JCFC, so care has to be taken in choice of words, lest your correspondent should meet with an "accident" in a dark car park at Emley. Once again, however, there was no need to be careful, as Mr Thomas proved the ideal referee for this match. He obviously knows the game very well and looks very comfortable in his current role within it. He made every effort not to interfere unnecessarily, keeping play moving while making it clear, unobtrusively, that indiscretions had not gone unnoticed. He looked totally at ease and must have been doing well, as only twice did the Liversedge foghorn feel the need to inform him of his shortcomings - and that almost gently!

Back at home, JCFC settled down to listen to the Champions League Final on the radio - and promptly fell asleep! Still, only a dozen days to the Euros.

A 6.30 pm kick-off, a local derby and (this being Yorkshire) above all, free admission drew a large crowd to

Friday 4th June 2021
Sheffield and Hallamshire County Senior League Cup Quarter-Final
Dodworth Miners Welfare   3   v   1   North Gawber Colliery
Sam Clayton (Sheffield); Ben Curry, Steve Clayton.

The real reason for the visit to Step 7 was born of JCFC's pledge to keep readers updated on Mr Clayton's promise that he would be completely grey (his hair at least), by the time he reaches 45. As yet, no change has been detected - just over twenty years to go. The sight of his silver-thatched dad operating as AR2, however, showed how the prophecy had arisen, though Sam had failed to add that the evidence suggested that he might by then have added a few pounds. No chance of adding pounds for JCFC on this occasion, with neither tea bar nor food on offer.

Dodworth had a shot cleared, but the visitors' respite was brief, as the home side  took the lead after just 5 minutes. They continued to have the upper hand and added a second just after the half hour. As Dodworth continued to dominate, JCFC had a somewhat distant view of proceedings, being stationed level with the opposite penalty area.

North Gawber made a better start to the second half, with a couple of half decent attacks - JCFC still at the wrong end! - and from a free-kick on 54 minutes nifty footwork created an opening to make it 2-1. Their  hopes were largely extinguished on 67 minutes, however, when a worked move from a Dodworth corner saw a floated cross convert itself into a shot as it sailed into the net. North Gawber did create an unmissable opportunity in added time - but managed to miss it, so Dodworth march on into the semi-final.

Mr Clayton scored well for movement, with effective use of reverse gear. He showed good judgement in looking for advantage, but calling play back, when none was gained. A minor contretemps in the first half was dealt with well and the only card came late on when a Dodworth player kicked the ball away. There were two occasions when JCFC might have interpreted events differently, but that is no indication that Mr Clayton was incorrect. There were a couple of decisions towards the close - still at the opposite end to JCFC - which were contested, but overall, Mr Clayton emerged well on the credit side of the ledger, though one churlish coach appeared to have a different opinion to express at the final whistle. Why has football abandoned any notions of sportsmanship?

A leisurely walk back to the station and a lengthy but pleasant enough wait for the train to Huddersfield enabled JCFC to be back home - hungry! - by 22.45.

No doubt, nemesis. That has been the case for the last 21 months, so we are accustomed to it. The more worrying feature is that geographical considerations might mean that relegation would deposit Brighouse in the NWCFL rather than the more comfortable NCEFL, which seems to be gradually migrating Southwards. On the bright side, 2022 might produce a return to the FA Vase.

I was thinking more drastic than that. With Irama Sport's "eviction" of Whyteleafe FC and Abingdon Town from their stadiums (and the two teams' withdrawals from their leagues), it was suggested that Brighouse's ground might be similarly vlnerable. I hope not.

Not something I was aware of. There has been a suggestion, a year or two ago, that the council might designate the ground as a site for housing, but nothing had been heard since then. Now you have got me worried!

Is it correct that Brighouse have a lease until 2026, which might offer some medium term protection? Events at Whyteleafe and Abingdon Town are alarming, and the apparent association of Ian Rush with Irama Sports is worrying.

Any pre-season games taking your fancy JCFC, where might we expect to see you pop up?

I tend to avoid pre-season friendlies, unless there is a very good reason to attend.

The next match might perhaps be at Ainslie Park on July 9th, Nicola permitting.
