The penalty shoot-out meant that the planned trip back home would have been rather tight, so JCFC remained  at the ground, passing the time with steak pie, chips and peas, while waiting for

Yorkshire Trophy Final
Penistone Church   0   v   4   Liversedge
Gareth Thomas, Jonathan Spencer, Gavin Hock.

Circumstances had forced Penistone to field a team with a slightly makeshift look. Liversedge continued with their policy of putting out a team of giants, with more arriving from the bench in the course of the match. Now, height does not necessarily equate to playing ability - I offer myself as proof of that - but it does have certain advantages and Liversedge took the lead with a header after just 5 minutes. Mr Thomas called a drinks break midway through the first half, but kept it to a limited time with an imperious whistle. In the closing minutes of the half Penistone broke clear, the keeper blocking for a corner and they followed shortly afterwards with a great move, sadly foiled by a very good save.

The result was all but certain just one minute into the second half, when the Church keeper could only parry a shot, leaving a simple tap-in. A foul by the Penistone number 3 on 55 minutes looked as if it was going to earn a card, but Mr Thomas settled for pointing out that there had better be no repeat. It was fortunate for the player that he did, as he subsequently did receive an indisputable yellow for an attack-stopper. From the free-kick, the ball was headed back into the danger area and an overhead kick gave Sedge their third. The fourth came in the closing minute, an unfortunate defender being left facing a posse of attackers and conceding a comical own-goal as he tried to effect a clearance.

It should be born in mind that Mr Thomas is one of only two referees to recognise JCFC, so care has to be taken in choice of words, lest your correspondent should meet with an "accident" in a dark car park at Emley. Once again, however, there was no need to be careful, as Mr Thomas proved the ideal referee for this match. He obviously knows the game very well and looks very comfortable in his current role within it. He made every effort not to interfere unnecessarily, keeping play moving while making it clear, unobtrusively, that indiscretions had not gone unnoticed. He looked totally at ease and must have been doing well, as only twice did the Liversedge foghorn feel the need to inform him of his shortcomings - and that almost gently!

Back at home, JCFC settled down to listen to the Champions League Final on the radio - and promptly fell asleep! Still, only a dozen days to the Euros.
