In a moment of enthusiasm, I have just splashed out £3 on a ticket for a Yorkshire Trophy match four weeks tomorrow. Let's hope my optimism is not misplaced.

A further £3 has gone on a ticket for a match on Tuesday.Such extravagance!

Wednesday's game is out, as the usual train back from Penistone has been withdrawn, whether permanently or as a Covid measure remains to be seen. I hope it is the latter, as Penistone is a favourite destination.

After 139 days,it was possible to return to St Giles's Road along with over 400 others for

Monday 17th May 2021
Yorkshire Trophy Group A
Brighouse Town 1 v 0 Penistone Church
Darius Bradley (Bradford); Jason Miller,  Dwayne Chappell.

Penistone possibly shaded the opening quarter, but midway through the half, Brighouse did force the visiting keeper into a save, which he effected without great difficulty. A minute later he was unable to prevent the Brighouse winger, who somehow found himself unmarked in front of goal, from giving the home side the lead. Penistone retaliated within seconds of the restart, but fired the shot over the bar. In the next quarter hour the most exciting thing came when AR1 dropped his flag - but such was the torpid nature of the play at that stage that he was able to retrieve it seamlessly. On 40 minutes a long kick by the Penistone keeper found an attacker in a shooting position, but the home keeper made a decent save.

It was almost on the hour before there was any further incident. Brighouse saw a good shot foiled by a splendid save, the keeper turning the ball for a corner. This was taken in an unorthodox way, being played back to a midfielder, whose lofted ball was about to float into the opposite top corner until the keeper made an even better save, leaping to touch it away for a further corner. This one came to nothing and normal service was resumed. On 80 minutes the Penistone keeper again did well, diving at the feet of a lumbering Brighouse sub. There was a little momnent of silliness shortly afterwards, Mr Bradley sensibly settling for a brief word with the two players involved.

It had not been the most exciting of encounters, but the great thing is that it happened at all. Credit to the Town manager, who has been instrumental in setting up this mini competition, and to their media manager, who has assumed responsibility for finding officials among his contacts. Mr Bradley,as usual, appeared accurate enough in his decision making and had no problems. Somehow, though, he fails to excite - he does not, to these elderly eyes, seem to project himself in a way that suggests that he believes he is doing well. A sound evening's work nonetheless.

A revised crowd of 575 was in attendance for a more entertaining game at

Tuesday 18th May 2021
Yorkshire Trophy Group B
Golcar United  2  v  2  Liversedge

Alas neither the programme nor the PA announcer gave details of the officials. The dapper referee, in stature and hair colour at least, might have been taken at a distance for a reincarnation of Andy Smith but neither he nor his assistants could be identified.

Sedge had had seven wins out of seven when the league was curtailed, and had enjoyed a decent run in the Vasae, so were favourites against their lower-ranked opponents. Their number 10 quickly proved himself an annoying individual, with a petty piece of delaying tactics in the first minute. Thereafter the only excitement in the first quarter was a clearance from the Golcar goalmouth. Just before the half hour, however, a sweeping end to end move involving four rapid passes saw Sedge take the lead, which they extended two minutes later when Golcar failed to deal with a high ball into the box. The writing looked to be on the wall - the more so when a longish range Liversedge free-kick was only just tipped over the bar on 40 minutes. Golcar, however, were not found wanting and headed home a corner on 42 minutes. Back they came immediately, with three corners in succession, the third being fumbled by the Sedge keeper, allowing Golcar to equalise. The Sedge number 10 appeared to lose his rag in the next minute, backheeling a kick at an opponent as he ran back to defend, following it up with a rash tackle which was penalised. This being a glorified friendly, the referee is left naked in the conference chamber and no card was issued.

The second half was fairly evenly contested, though with no further scoring. There was a brief skirmish on 72 minutes, with several players deciding to contribute. When matters were resolved, the referee decided to interpret it as "Blessed are the peacemakers" and restarted the game without any warnings.

A successful evening for the officials overall, despite the difficulty AR1 had in overseeing substitutes who were rather too eager to get onto the pitch and had to be recalled. Thanks to the referee's punctuality, it was possible to catch an earlier bus than feared, so he ended up in JCFC's good books.

Saturday brings a visit for the first time in over half a century to what used to be known as Post Office Road, the home of Featherstone Rovers, for Brighouse Town's visit to Wakefield. With luck the officials may be recognisable!

Thanks, nemesis. I never cease to be amazed at your ability to unearth obscure information.

I had heard of Mr Rushworth from one of his former Huddersfield League umpiring colleagues, but had not seen him before. I shall recognise him next time.

Interesting,JCFC-probably about 50 years since I last was at Post Office Road-to see a match with Bradford Northern. It was another life-collieries,West Riding buses to a host of places, and a busy level crossing with freights trundling to the Aire Valley Power stations laden with coal.
Look forward to your report, when you might describe today's scene.

I used to pass through Featherstone occasionally and always found its dark red brick houses much less appealing than the more attractive (to me, at least) millstone grit of my home area. In order to balance the numbers, the Rugby League used to classify Huddersfield as a Lancashire club, so away fixtures within Yorkshire were infrequent. My recollection of Post Office Road is of getting soaked - and miserable, as Fartown were always beaten. It was not a ground that many visiting teams relished going to, as Rovers always had strong teams, who gave nothing away. At least they could play, unlike Dewsbury, whose tight pitch at Crown Flatt left space and entertainment at a premium. The Featherstone ground is clearly visible from the train and looks much trimmer than I recall. Fortunately, the station was reopened in 1992, after 25 years, so getting there will be no problem. The train times for the return, however, are less convenient - a sharp exit may be required, or failing that 55 minutes wait. It is to be hoped that Mr Referee keeps to time!

On a sunny afternoon with an array of paler new-build brick, Featherstone had a slightly less unappealing appearance and 691 souls had negotiated the small not-much-funfair to reach the entrance to

Saturday 22nd May 2021
Yorkshire Trophy Group A
Wakefield   0  v  2  Brighouse Town
Gareth Thomas (Flockton); Michael Corbally, Mark Findlay.

The ground was largely unrecognisable, with modernish stands on three sides, with only the terrace at the bottom end to reflect its traditional roots. The teams changed behind the stand on one side of the pitch, the officials in the clubhouse on the opposite side, which may perhaps explain why the Wakefield keeper appeared in a green shirt, only marginally lighter than Brighouse's green strip. More probably, it was the only one available, as no effort was made to change it, even at half -time. Wakefield had lost their opening fixture at Penistone by 5-1 on Wednesday, so needed to beat Brighouse by three goals to qualify for the semi-finals, which, given that they are a Step 7 club against a Step 4, seemed unlikely. It seemed even more unlikely after 5 minutes, when Brighouse scored a nicely-worked opener. There was almost a second on 13 minutes, but the keeper tipped the ball over the crossbar. Wakefield, however, were not lacking in spirit and determination and enjoyed an even share of the play. On 25 minutes a Brighouse defender made a hash of controlling the ball and was bailed out bravely by his keeper, who suffered an injury in the process and had to be replaced. Wakefield were creating openings and an excellent move on 39 minutes ended with a shot just over the bar.. On 43 minutes the Brighouse defence again failed miserably to deal with a long ball, but Wakefield's shot was off target. The goal kick was taken, it was the turn of the Wakefield defence to lose concentration and from nowhere, Brighouse scored a second.

Mr Thomas had gained points from JCFC by not extending the first half, and was ready to start the second promptly, as were Wakefield, but Brighouse were dilatory - their manager might well have had plenty to get off his chest. The Brighouse passing into the penalty area was unerringly accurate in finding a green shirt; unfortunately it was almost always the one worn by the Wakefield keeper. On 65 minutes, though, a decent run and accurate cross by the substitute created a chance: the goalkeeper blocked the first shot, but the ball fell to a Brighouse attacker, who, seeing the Rugby posts, went for a conversion, his shot clearing the bar, the terraces, the alleyway behind, the back yards and finally landing on the roof of one of the houses. Wakefield in the end created the better chances, with a header cleared off the line and a shot that required a good save from the replacement Brighouse goalkeeper.

It had been an encouraging afternoon for Wakefield, while at least this Brighouse supporter was left thinking that another battle against relegation might be in store in the coming season in what looks to be a strong NPL Division 1 East. As for the cheery officials, it was a breeze for them and they seemed to enjoy their afternoon. Mr Thomas reminded a couple of players in the latter stages that they had used up their ration of fouls, but was otherwise not greatly exercised. He did judge the time-lag on his whistle very well indeed throughout.

JCFC must confess to leaving on 90 minutes, but there appears to have been no further incident of note in added time. The 15.58 train to Pontefract Monkhill was therefore reached without difficulty (it was a 14.00 kick-off) and home by 18.00.

Monday has an 18.45 kick-off, Liversedge needing to beat Nostell by at least three goals to top their group.

The Clayborn's floodlights are currently being replaced, so a civilised 18.45 kick-off time was set for

Monday 24th May 2021
Yorkshire Trophy Group B
Liversedge   2   v   1   Nostell Miners Welfare
Ian Johnston (Wakefield); Jack Andrews, Jonathan Spencer.

Looking at the team sheet, JCFC raised an eyebrow at the choice of referee - if a prompt start is required, Mr Johnston would not have been high on the list, but on this occasion there was little delay, for which he was only minimally responsible, (masochistically, he chose to have a conversation with the odious Sedge keeper.) In fact the evening was sunny and there was never any question of problems with the light.

Liversedge were clearly the stronger side, though Nostell did have an early chance, though the required volley flew over the empty net. On 6 minutes, however, Nostell played a long ball down the right, two attackers chased it, (one might have been marginally offside had he become involved), the keeper came out of his area to clear, only to miscue to the attacker, who popped it back over him into the net. From this point Sedge did the bulk of the attacking, and there were numerous alarms at the Nostell end, both before and after Sedge's 28th minute equaliser.

The teams stayed out on the pitch at half-time. The officials retreated indoors (Mr Johnston failing to find the correct raffle ticket) but limited themselves to ten minutes and play resumed punctually. Liversedge took the lead after a run of corners just six minutes into the half. The Nostell number 7 had a good turn of speed and was pulled back cynicaly. He took exception to this and retaliated, prompting a minor skirmish. Mr Johnston issued a yellow card for the foul and the retaliation. For a couple of minutes, things were slightly heated, but calmed down after a good long shot by Sedge had been palmed over. Liversedge needed three more goals to top the group, but, though they pressed hard, none came.
As a result, they travel to Brighouse for the semi-final on Wednesday, a battle of two underperforming sides, while Golcar United host Penistone Church in the other.

Mr Johnston had been his usual commendably vociferous self and there was nothing to fault in his work (except not drawing raffle ticket number 10!) or that of his assistants.

A right turn would have taken JCFC back to the centre of Cleckheaton, there to wait almost an hour for the first of two buses. Instead the left turn was made, and though what used to be a walk of just over an hour seems to have extended by twenty minutes, it still proved considerably quicker - and the exertion made for a good night's sleep.

Looking at the League allocations for steps 3-6, I wonder whether the Non League Paper has been guilty of a misprint - or are Graham Street Prims now really to be known as Graham Street Pimms? It would certainly be a far cry from their Primitive Methodist roots.

JCFC arrived ridiculously early, as a big crowd was forecast, but it didn't materialise - apparently there was some other game on in the fair city of Gdansk - so there was plenty of space at

Wednesday 26th May 2021
Yorkshire Trophy Semi-Final
Brighouse Town   0   v   3   Liversedge
Jamie Rhodes; Gavin Hock, Dwayne Chappell.

Liversedge had a clear height advantage and it did not take even JCFC to observe that they were winning everything in the air. Sure enough, a succession of headers on the quarter hour ended with yet another header giving the visitors the lead. They had the ball in the net again just four minutes later when the home keeper fumbled, but Mr Rhodes had spotted an infringement and the goal did not stand. Sedge were also winning more than their fair share of ball on the ground, but on 39 minutes Brighouse had a potentially dangerous attacking free-kick. They lofted the ball across the area, it was headed clear and the Sedge counter-attack was survived with difficulty and the fortuitous assistance of the post. Town had no such luck just before the break, conceding a penalty to go 2-0 behind. At the break, the individual wearing the Brighouse captain's armband had an extended harangue at Mr Rhodes over an earlier decision (not the penalty.) JCFC would recommend a course in the casting out of own beams rather than seeking imaginary motes in the officials.

It took a brilliant header off the line to deny Sedge a third on 55 minutes, but the stay of execution only lasted ten minutes. Had a Liversedge attacker not strayed needlessly offside they would have had a fourth on 69 minutes. The second half had been poor fare and Mr Rhodes rightly produced his yellow card on three occasiions, though on one of them it almost looked as if he had lost the offender, so there was a delay. The officials were fine, Mr Rhodes playing some very good advantages. Brighouse were not, and JCFC's recently predicted battle against relegation next season begins to look optimistic, as there was little sign of a battle on this occasion.

Brighouse now face Golcar in the 3rd place play-off at 11.30 on Saturday, with Liversedge taking on Penistone at 15.00. With a maximum of 675 spectators allowed, and the one ticket covering both matches, there might just be difficulties with numbers for the second match.

Having listened to him three times, twice from the opposite side of the pitch, the sad thing is that the Liversedge manager - or whoever is the owner of the voice fronm the technical area - is allowed to get away with regularly abusing the officials. He is far from the only one, of course, but it would be good if the authorities urged referees to clamp down, rather than spout the dreaded weasel word "manage" things.

It was an 11.30 kick-off for

Saturday 29th May 2021
Yorkshire Trophy Third Place Play-Off
Brighouse Town   3   v   3   Golcar United
Henry Naylor (Halifax); Danielle Whitworth, Lewis Dawson.

Mr Naylor had been seen many, times on the line over the years, but never before in the middle. In recent times he has acquired a beard; Mr Dawson, surprisingly appearing as AR2, was loyally heading in the same direction; Miss Whitworth, it seemed must not have received the memo.

It proved a splendidly entertaining game. Golcar fired a screamer into the top corner after just three minutes, giving the home keeper no chance. Brighouse tried a similar shot just a minute later, but this time the ultimate destination was the trees outside the ground. Back came Golcar, a good move ending with a shot just over the bar, while a decent Brighouse effort was saved well - all within the first eight minutes. As quarter time approached, the Brighouse keeper made another good save and a minute later a second Golcar screamer flew just wide. Brighouse had a strong shot come back off the crossbar, but it was Golcar who extended their lead on 36 minutes. A most enjoyable first half ended with Brighouse pulling a goal back with a splendid header from a corner.

Six academy players had been listed in the home side's team and they were gradually introduced during the second period, so the level of enthusiasm and commitment increased - not to mention technical ability. Town drew level on 52 minutes, following a free-kick. A couple of minutes later a crude challenge sent a Brighouse player up into the air and there followed the most pathetic outbreak of serial pushing; if you are going to have aggro, at least make a decent job of it, folks. When it subsided, Mr Naylor checked on the injured Golcar player, allowing a further minor skirmish to break out behind his back.It took ages to persuade the Golcar physio to come on, and just as long to persuade him to depart when his job was done. The eventual outcome was yellow cards for the Golcar 4 and the Brighouse 9, plus a warning to each coaching team after an unseemly squabble had been reported by Miss Whitworth. A fine strike gave Brighose the lead on 65 minutes as each side continued to create chances, the Golcar keeper making a good block before Golcar drew level with ten minutes to go. A Brighouse shot was deflected over the bar by the keeper's leg, but the scores finished level. Great credit to the home youngsters - especially the diminutive one who could have been sneaked into an Under-15 side, without any eyebrows being raised, but had a knack of emerging from challenges in possession of the ball.

JCFC, not being a fan of the modern need for a decisive result, thought that the sensible thing would be to shake hands and declare honours even at the end of a splendid game, but instead we had penalties. Golcar went first, scoring with their first three, Brighouse with their first two. Their third was saved, but Miss Whitworth flagged and the retake was successful. Golcar converted their fourth, Brighouse missed, as did Golcar with their fifth. Brighouse's final penalty was taken by their keeper, and was unsuccessful, leaving Golcar to claim third prize.

The game had been lively throughout, aided by Mr Naylor's slightly liberal triage and use of advantage. There were a couple of moments in the later stages when reverse gear might have been advisable with the ball out of play, but nothing untoward happened. A good lunchtime's work. And wonder of wonders, Mr Dawson made it to the final whistle (and beyond), but as he was not in the middle, can JCFC claim this as third time lucky?
