Rob Jones

Having read numerous posts on this forum saying how good he is and he will be the next to make SG1. I have just watched the highlights of Brentford v Bristol City. Refereed by Mr Jones. It was only highlights but there were two major incidents that I don't think he dealt with very well at all. Firstly following a challenge a Brentford player was covering the ball with his legs. Instead of making a sensible call and blowing up for a drop ball. He did nothing and then opponents started kicking at the ball. This then set off a slight melee which he had to sort out and the result being two  yellow cards to the players involved. A short while later , the Brentford player who had been cautioned was involved with a challenge in which if he did make contact it was very very slight. Up come Mr Jones, second yellow and off. It for me was not a yellow whether the player had been cautioned before or not. You could also argue that he caused that red card by his earlier mishandling of the situation. So perhaps he has a little way to go before he can stand on the pedestal that he seems to have been given.

Believe me, the very last person to be putting themselves on a pedestal is Rob Jones. As for others, I am of the opinion that he has some of the best raw talent that comes along in every generation. Of course he is far from the finished article and has much to learn but that he will become one of, if not the, leading referee of his generation I have no doubt at all, barring any mishaps or injuries.

I too had heard good things of Rob Jones. However is handling of the 2 incidents discussed were very poor and the challenge never worthy of a card -doubt if it was a foul. Must and can do better.  The other post is exactly as I see it.

I agree fully with these posts. I don't think Rob Jones handled the yellow card incidents at all well, and I suspect he realises that now as well. However he is undoubtedly an up-and-coming ref who should go all the way to the top, barring mishaps, and the Brentford game (and one in the rain and spray of Bolton last season) should do no more than remind the authorities not to push him too quickly. As for pedestals, I don't think it was suggested that Jones was putting himself on a pedestal, rather that some of us are putting him on a pedestal, perhaps rather prematurely. A promising ref who, with a bit of careful handling, will realise his potential and reach the top as the likes of Clatts and Oliver have already done.

Not seen the first yellow card but just seen the second. It's difficult to tell if there is contact but I wouldn't necessarily say Jones was wrong to give the foul and I think it is one where if you are saying  it is a free-kick you'd probably also have to say it was stopping a promising attack considering the attacking player was goal side of the defender and heading towards the penalty area.

If a referee gives a free-kick, I would generally expect a yellow card to follow.
