I'm pleased that David Rock has been promoted to the NG after a fair number of years as a 2A. Not seen a lot of him but he's always been pretty good when I have.
I think that leaves Joe Johnson as the longest serving on the 2A list now - if he's still on it. He only did a few games in the early part of last season so I'm assuming he was injured.

Has Mr Whitestone decided on a career with refereeing, rather than continuing his job with the police? The latter was usually the explanation for him not going onto the SG2 list earlier. On the two games I saw him last season, while he was one of the better NG officials, perhaps fell below the high standard I'd expected from previous games when he was in the middle.

How old is he?

Not a clue. He's been in the Met for about 15/16 years.  Was 1st promoted to the FL in 2006. I'd guess he must be mid 30's.

I ask because he has probably reached his immediate pension age/qualification date, which then allows him to leave and take up officiating full time.

Can we infer anything from 8 being promoted to the National List? Obviously two have been promoted, but I mean in regards of retirees.

Well last year I seem to recall we had 6 in and 6 out.

If only we could choose the 8 to go !!!

Will Finnie is a very fine prospect indeed; as I am sure are many of the others but I only know and am certain about Finnie. Although the spelling is different, the name has excellent pedigree in the world of refereeing.

Can anyone enlighten me a bit more please on this statement that 5 Championship refs are being appointed VAR?
I think I must have missed the announcement.
How does this work and will this replace their reffing roles or run alongside? Are any PL refs involved?
When do we expect names to be released?
Thanks in advance

Interview with Mike Riley - https://www.premierleague.com/news/1214130

"Will Premier League match officials be operating the VAR system?

Yes. There will be a panel of Premier League referees who are VARs and we're recruiting five Championship referees to act as VARs as well."

I would guess these officials will continue to referee in the Championship too, although presumably they will get slightly fewer appointments.

It sounds like not every Premier League referee will be used as a VAR from the use of the word 'panel'?
