No 5 to 4 promotions either and that also now runs August 2020 to April 2022.  I suspect they are going to have a real shortage of level 4s in some areas, and the FA have said there may be interim promotions but as yet haven't said when, guess they will wait to see how bad the shortages are.  Whilst there are no 4 to 3 promotions, or 4 to 5 demotions, every year L4s are lost through natural wastage.  May well be worse this year as some might have got so used to having their Saturdays and midweeks back that they decide not to return.  That was my reason for quitting L3, I spent a few months out after knee surgery and realised I wasn't really missing it, certainly not as much as I should have been.

Exactly the reason I stopped.  Decided to take a short break in 2011 to see if I was missing it.  Ten years later ............

It was clearly time to heed the advice of many players, fans, some colleagues and more than a few assessors and hang up the whistle.

Sadly there has been little natural wastage around my waistline.  I suspect fitness tests may weed out a few more than usual after a two-year gap since the last ones.

Yes, that is indeed another risk for the FA.  I can see lots of L5s getting supply league games next season, either promotion candidates or recently retired L4s.

There has been a shortage of level 4s for about 3 years. Problem is also not enough assessors at level 3/4/5 so also difficult.
Also (one of the main reasons I took voluntary demotion back to 5) was the pathetic arrogance of some referees - particularly those in the “core” groups who would do anything to “get to the next level.” And who would get away with anything because of who they were and who they knew.
I still haven’t forgiven 1 particular referee for throwing myself and the other assistant under the bus in a post match debrief with the observer after a tight relegation game

I wouldn’t say that Ms Welch’s promotion came as a surprise. She had an FL trial match, alongside Mather, as well as an FA final, both indications of a good season. Furthermore, she seems to have relatively few NL matches and referees regularly in the FAWSL. Surely these performances will be taken into account also?

Surely not! Why would the WSL performances have anything to do with promotion to EFL? The list on WSL is made up of officials who are not only 2A referees and nor does every NL referee officiate on it. This competition should in no way contribute to a promotion within the men’s pathway and whilst I understand having our top female referees officiating in our top female competition, I am interested to see how this would work next season. Would Rebecca still referee on WSL and therefore less on EFL than the other officials? If what you say, would those marks then contribute to a potential promotion to SG2? I can’t see that happen somehow and therefore I cannot imagine those performances could be considered for promotion to the EFL list

As Hughesy says above, WSL is a separate refereeing pyramid and as such as no reflection on promotion within NL/EFL.

Observations and club marks within PL2, National League and some FA competitions are the "on the pitch" contributing factors and then you have the usual off field factors such as (but not limited to) availability, fitness test result, LOTG exam result and Football League interview outcome.

The EFL site has updated the list of referees for 2021/22.

The changes are those that we are already aware of.  No longer listed are Duncan, Mason and G Salisbury.  The additions are Kitchen, Mather, Reeves and Welch.

https://www.efl.com/clubs-and-competitions/match-officials/national-list-of-referees/

No assistants listed as yet but it looks like that page is work in progress.

So James Adcock soldiers on and Darren Handley stays on despite not refereeing a FL game last season. I wish James in particular well and hope that he can put his past problems with injuries behind him, much in the same way as Lee Probert a few years ago.

Having seen Mark Jones on the line at Spotland on Friday and looking at his other appointments this season, it would appear he is no longer a SG2 assistant.

I'm hearing news of the mid season 2A promotions have been distributed. Does anyone have the full list of the successful referee's?
I've seen a couple of names so far appear on social media;
Greg Rollason
Mike Barlow
Well done all! Fantastic news, so close to the professional game now.
