I suspect Charlieboy would ideally settle for nothing less than Mr Mather being hung, drawn and quartered....TWICE

Congratulations to all promoted this season! Pleasantly surprised to see 4 promoted to SG1 - hopefully some refs who are guaranteed their weekly outing will start being phased into specialist var operators and allow others the opportunity to develop!

Pleased for Brammall and Busby - disappointed for Hicks as I thought he was superb on the occasions I saw him ref.

As for the EFL newbies, congratulations to all! Worked with Andrew Kitchen a few times and he is very good. I’ve know Rebecca for a long time and she too is brilliant. And finally Mather - I disagree with the idea he should miss out on promotion because of a poor play off final. The very reason he got that game in the first place is because he was the best all season! Surely he deserves it more despite one poor outing than someone further down the merit table!

I’d be surprised if he is 43. If so then he certainly aged better than I did at that age!!!

This is from the PGMOL press release ...

Harrington (below) spent four years as an EFL assistant referee and four years as a National League referee before promotion to the EFL in 2012.  He has been a Select Group 2 referee since 2016 and has refereed nearly 200 EFL matches.

Even if his 4 years as an EFL assistant were concurrent with his 4 years as a National League referee that would mean he was promoted to those roles in 2008.  So if he really is 37 that would mean he was a National League referee and EFL assistant by the age of 24 / 25.  Not impossible but very would be very quick progress.  Although he has a linked in profile that says he finished 6th form college in 2002, and that indeed would make him 37.

If he is indeed Tony rather than Ant(h)ony, and was born in North Cleveland, then 37 is correct.

I seem to remember watching him referee an Under 18 game at Newcastle against Leeds 15 years ago, which would seem to fit in with that timeline.

It is probably worth noting that the fitness test requirements are being ramped up over the next couple of years, along with the body fat limits being reduced, which is of course a way of getting rid of the older elements of each list without falling foul of age discrimination legislation!  This may explain the fairly unprecedented four promotions to the SG1 referees list.

Regarding the promotion of Rebecca Welch, none of us will ever know where she finished in the merit table and anything else is pure speculation.  Granted, she didn't get appointed to a play-off game but do remember she may have been injured or been unavailable for work/personal reasons.  However, if this isn't the case then it would be disappointing.  Ten referees were appointed to the play off games (including 4th officials) and you would have to logically assume these were the top ten referees in the merit list.  To then promote someone outside of that based on their belonging to a particular social demographic as a potential PR exercise would be wrong and totally unfair on the official concerned - it's a big step up from the NL to the EFL, not necessarily in terms of the standard of football but most definitely in terms of expectation, prestige and media scrutiny.

We will never know, but I really hope this promotion was made on the basis of merit and nothing else, as promoting someone before they are ready is totally unfair on the referee.

Gillett was SG1 ready when he first stepped off the plane from Aus.

FIFA International Referee, VAR experienced and a top national official down under...

With only one known retirement, it was certainly a surprise that four have been promoted.  Having said that with six SG1 referees who will be over 50 by August I'm not sure that they had much choice but to promote more than usual.  With the usual cautious first season appointing to the PL I'm sure that they will be helping out the reduced numbers in the SG2.

Pleased to see 4 going up to the PL - especially Gillett who was comfortably the best in the Championship and produced one of the best refereeing performances I've seen in a long time in the Play Off semi finals.  Brooks and Harrington were similarly quite predictable.  The one which surprised me was Salisbury - clearly he has a lot of talent to make such a quick rise to the top flight.  The last referee to get such a rapid ascent to the Premier League was Chris Kavanagh.

Salisbury's one year on the SG2 following promotion from the National Group is certainly the quickest since that select group was introduced in 2016.  Although he was promoted to the NG in 2016 along with Rob Jones.
The net gain in SG1 and net loss in SG2 leads me to predict a rash of posts next season complaining about the new SG1 members not getting enough Premier League games.

Congratulations to all, but I'd like to note the particularly meteoric rise of Darren Williams who as a late starter was a Level 7 at the start of the 2016/17 season and has now progressed to Football League line within 5 years.  A remarkable achievement but absolutely no surprise to anyone who has met or worked with him I'm sure.

We appear to disagree on Mr Bramall. I reckon he is Thomas William Bramall. Josh Bramall has the same mother's maiden name.

Johnathon Peter G Bickerdike was born Q1 1991.

It is a decade since I saw Mr Liddle referee at Wakefield and he did not look particularly youthful then. I wonder whether he might not be Geoffrey William Liddle, born Cleveland 1977 - but that is just a guess.

You are correct, Geoff Liddle was born in 1977

Even more unfair on the teams and supporters of teams they referee in their unready state. Not to mention unfair a referee who might have been ready but misses out in the interests of inclusivity and diversity.

Welch was excellent when she did us this season and her performance was certainly a standout. There are good men who've missed out but that was always going to happen when only four go up. Both Mather and Kitchen made errors in the playoffs (and both generally did well in our normal season games btw) so they are not infallible either nor is any other official.

Thomas "Tom" (William) Bramall - Sheffield, Yorks Q3 1990
(read philosophy at Magdalene College, Cambridge;

I'd love to think that was true, JT, but how sure of your sources are you? The photo of the Tom Bramall who read philosophy at Cambridge and now works for Fried Frank, is not that of our refereeing friend.

Have to say with the abuse of match officials week in, week out by teams and supporters alike I couldn't really care less if it's unfair on them!  But I take your point.
