Oh I thought somebody said that three FL Referees had gone for interview for promotion to SG2?

Perhaps I misread that but I assumed that’s what was meant so I wondered who those three were

There was a single comment earlier in this thread about 3 referees having gone to the promotion interviews for SG2.

Do we have names of who that was? Sorry if I’ve missed them elsewhere

There was a post saying because Smith didn't pass the fitness test, only two went forward to interview. SO presumably Smith was one of the three names and Bramall another.

Think you’re mixing up your SGs.

If Josh Smith tested positive for Covid within 24 hours of doing the fitness test, then surely PGMOL should be offering him a further fitness test. In any other organisation you wouldn’t be disadvantaged for having Covid. It appears obvious from the appointments that Smith finished top of the pile in SG2 this season and thus his performances merit a chance for promotion. If any other employer treated you in this way, you’d be looking for somewhere else to work. As we know the PGMOL hold all the aces with referees and if you challenge them or the FA in any way, there are ways and means of them weeding you out. This is not the way an organisation should be treating an employee.

Of course.

Presumably PGMOL want their best performing referees to be promoted, it's in their interest as well as his. Why would they not be exploring ways to get him through the fitness process rather than putting unnecessary, and possibly unjust, obstacles in his way.

I have heard that the 3 for selection process were
Madley, Toner and Bell

Thanks Nowayref

Madley really not a surprise and I would expect him to be promoted, Toner also had good appointments later in the season, but Bell is a surprise for me. Not because I don’t think he is deserving but I did expect maybe Barratt or Backhouse to be in there.
It will be interesting to see how many places there are now that Josh Smith didn’t go to the interview day.

It seems very strange that all the other promotions are out except this group, I wonder what the logic behind this delay is

That guy was close to being a UEFA elite only a year or two ago and was one of the most trusted 1st group officials. While I understand the EPL isn’t the same as the SPFL I think he certainly should be fast tracked to the top ASAP, top class referee IMHO, big loss for Scotland and huge gain for England.

Surely, he should be fast tracked to SG2 as a minimum, having been on SPFL. I believe Mr. Gillett was when he moved to England from Australia.

SG2 could certainly do with a referee of Madden's calibre to raise the standard of officiating in that group.

I'm really not sure that SG2 has proven itself yet. It just seems an extra barrier for promising younger referees to get promoted. How long were the likes of Atkinson, Marriner, M Oliver, Webb and Clattenburg on the Football League for before being promoted to PL and how long would they be now?

I don't think the system works if you're just having 1 or maybe 2 promoted to SG2 each year. It just creates a blockage. If necessary, the weakest 3 or so of SG2 should be removed from the list at the end of each season.

Like Gillett, Madden should certainly have gone to at least SG2 initially but presumably there wasn't a space. He now has to do at least a year just to get to that level and then at least another year to get to SG1. And that's presuming he doesn't fail a fitness test due to catching Covid during a pandemic and find he has to do another season at that level automatically.

Atkinson and Marriner both had PL games in their 2nd seasons on the list.

Given he has moved to England due to his work commitments, I would guess that meant he wasn't a candidate for SG1 or SG2 as they are both full time, or at least part time, refereeing levels.
