Congrats to Gill, Wood from Panel to FL Middle I think they will be fine, and do a good job.

Herczig and Kirk need to significantly step up on what I saw from there Play Off Semi Finals, especially so Herczig who looked lost out there especially where numerous times in the first half was confronted by players, no loud whistle or card, just a wave of hands … and Kirk missed mandatory cautions imo in his semi final, and seemed like he was trying to be everyone best mate, which didn’t work.

Bramall promoted to Premier League middle good luck to him. Needs to keep up his good Foul detection rate, make big brave decisions, and remember he is now going to be a senior Chanpionship referee when his operating at that level, if Riley Keeps up with the 5-6 Premier a league middles in first season, hopefully not an he be blooded in and make at least 10-12 middle appointments this season. I agree with most now that Robinson and Linnigton are prob viewed very highly by the Football League but not by Riley. So they should just go out and enjoy there status as the top 2.

Seems to have worked quite nicely for him. Promotion after just 6 National League matches (and a playoff) must be a record.

Those 7 matches also saw a remarkably low just 16 yellow and no red cards.

I remember being very impressed with Linington in a few matches around 2010/11. I really thought he would go on to become a PL referee at that time, but never quite happened for whatever reason. I think he might have had some injury issues? It seems unlikely it will quite happen now.

Robinson seems to have been in contention a few times and had a PL trial match in 2019. Has his chance passed now? I'm not sure we can definitely say that but I'm certainly a bit surprised he hasn't been appointed by now so perhaps it won't happen.

I guess being in the right place at the right time is also a factor. That's perhaps especially true last season where 4 refs were promoted in one summer to SG1, which I think is a record. You could have been the 4th best referee last year and got promoted and in other years been the 2nd best and not got promoted. We've had 5 referees promoted and 4 retire from SG1 over last 2 seasons, so I'm not sure we'll see those numbers repeated again for a while.

It does seem extraordinary. So either he has performed with stonking brilliance in these 6 matches plus the play off or else he has a very fitting face ( or indeed perhaps a combination of the two ). Imagine a promotion to a senior medical post on such limited evidence of first rate practice.

It's a good point made but also I suggest shows a somewhat touching faith that the number promoted are always and invariably the same number heading the Merit List. I do not believe that to be the case.

No I agree it is not quite that simple, otherwise they could just promote the relevant number based on the merit table and there would be no need for interviews etc. But I would hope the merit table contributes quite significantly, at least in compiling the shortlist.

There’s hope for Alan Young then on this apparent precedent! 7 stonking games and up the ladder we go! 🙄

Conversely, for any referee presumably, 7 stinking games and down you go. Or isn't it as simple as that ?

That’s a good quantity of SG1 out on their ears then!

Interesting analogy comparing refereeing to medical posts. Oh to be a Medical Malpractice Lawyer in your scenario.

It's a serious point though and I guess a number of the decent NL referees I saw last season with 3 or more years experience must be wondering how on earth he showed so much merit in just 6 matches which superficially appear not to have been too challenging.

...... over 40% of his games featured Chesterfield and they lost them all !

Tom Kirk  must have done very well, to be promoted from the National league so quickly, thou i note several comments about the ability of numerous referees on the National League list, so perhaps ability has been shown and rewarded, on watching some FL League games there have been some poor performances this last season, with numerous names always appearing as having a poor game but maintained on the list.

So it will be interesting to see how he does, after speaking to him he his looking forward to the challenge, he will probably be sent to Stevenage first game to see Steve Evans, as a baptism of fire.

I must say that the standard of Referee in The National League has been generally quite poor.

Martin Woods has been the best I've seen by a long way whilst Adam Herczeg when I've seen him has been mid range.

Tom Kirk was identified as a pretty outstanding prospect some time ago and, I would think that he'd have been more high profile and likely a possible potential promotion candidate much earlier had he not spent time working in the USA

I'm not too surprised therefore by the speed of his elevation. He was 2B and then 2A, I believe just to check that the same level of performance was being demonstrated on his return as was before he left.

There was a single comment earlier in this thread about 3 referees having gone to the promotion interviews for SG2.

Do we have names of who that was? Sorry if I’ve missed them elsewhere

That is useful to know as certainly explains the possibility of a double jump at that level.

There was a post saying because Smith didn't pass the fitness test, only two went forward to interview. SO presumably Smith was one of the three names and Bramall another.
