Well deserved for Bramall, having seen him about 4-5 times. Perhaps it’s a bit of an indictment of the rest of SG2 that he’s got in ahead of more experienced colleagues…

I believe Smith failed fitness test therefore didn’t get an interview Only two went forward for interview.

“Reliable source” or rumour mill?

Sadly true. Unbeknown to Josh he was beginning a bout of covid having tested positive the next day and subsequently coming off the League One play off final

I know he will be determined to be back in the shop window next year

Shame. It shows how fragile the system can be and how all of the hard work across a season can be undone in the blink of an eye.

It seems a tad harsh that there has been no reconsideration if Smith was hit with Covid.

Also - is it commonplace for referees within the Select Group (1 or 2) to complete a fitness test before being promoted?

I am sure that at every other level, referees undertake a fitness test after being informed of their promotion - i.e. Level 3 referees were told in May and have June, July, etc. to complete the test.

Yes, if correct, it does not seem a very effective system.

If a referee has performed well all season and there have been no question marks over their fitness/positioning etc at any stage, then does it make sense not to consider them for promotion just because on one particular day they weren't able to complete a fitness test, especially if they later come down with Covid which could obviously be the explanation. It makes it all seem a bit of a lottery.

In such circumstances Josh should be allowed to take the fitness test  again when he has recovered and be promoted along with Thomas.  Disgusting treatment

It does seem to be a hard application of the rules. From earlier posts in the thread, my understanding is that Smith failed the fitness test and so did not go forward to interview. I would agree that there should be another opportunity to pass the fitness test and then to receive the opportunity for an interview. However there should be no automatic promotion until the interview is also successfully completed. People get called for interview and as a result sometimes do not receive promotion. If however Smith did have a successful interview then it seems quite reasonable that he should be given a further opportunity to prove his fitness.

In fairness the fitness test rule has always been there.  If you take it you are presenting yourself as fit and able to do it, and if you fail it will count against one of your two attempts.  I can look back to loads of L3 referees who took it and failed, and their defence that they weren't feeling great always fell on deaf ears.

Don't know Josh's situation though.

This is a fair point. I would hope there is some flexibility in the system. If, for example, a referee wakes up on the morning of the fitness test and feels rotten then I would hope there is space to withdraw from that day's test and take it on another occasion when feeling better. If that is so, then the responsibility lies with the referee.

So does this mean there are no promotions from National League List to SG2?

It was posted above that promotions to SG2 would be confirmed in due course.

Congratulations to everyone who has been promoted for the new season.

However, if you look at the 4 promotions to the premier league all ‘North’ (ish) and people say there isn’t a south / north divide, could even say that about last year too!  It does seem strange that Linington, Stroud & Robinson probably did 100 plus matches this year between them, probably been involved in the most TV matches & what’s classed as the big matches but didn’t get a look in…..must be very demotivating for these referees.

I think there is, your two attempts only include those that you actively turn up to.  Of course, postponing it too many times means you will run out of available tests.

I certainly pulled out of one the day before as I was feeling unwell and it wasn't held against me.

I'm certainly a believer there is a Northern bias, albeit probably accidental, but I'm not sure these are the best examples.  Stroud is nearly 53 and I'm sure even he didn't expect a promotion.  I get the impression that Linington & Robinson are seen as safe pairs of hands, hence the abundance of TV games, rather than necessarily SG1 development talent.

I think it is right that Linington and Robinson are seen as a safe pair of hands. It's a description which I have never quite decided is to be desired or not. Very often it's used to describe people who are comfortable and not being stretched at the level at which they are operating but without the flair or potential to go higher. I suppose it all depends on how ambitious one is. Better than being thought of as an unsafe pair of hands I suppose. In my own professional life I was always most content to be regarded, in the main, as a safe pair of hands or, my preferred term, a jobbing team player. It brought contentment by and large and certainly paid the bills  It was always interesting to see the bright young things overtake one to scale the dizzier heights and then watch them either enjoy a stellar career or else crash and burn.

It has often been said that senior referees are extremely competitive among themselves for promotion. Strong ambition to fulfil one's potential is an extremely commendable thing; trying to outshine others, less so in my book. I guess most of us have opinions about senior referees, sometimes along the lines of " I wonder quite how they have risen to that level " or more often " I wonder why they haven't gone further when they seem to have so much more ability than some who have " My conclusion, applying to most walks of life is this; however level you try and make the playing field, some faces fit better than others which goes a long way to explaining things.
