Until this year there was a real imbalance in refereeing levels in the North and South.  L3s in the South would mainly referee steps 3 and 4, whereas in the North it was often step 5 or even 6.  Same for L4s who were step 5 vs step 6 / 7.  For L3s it is a national merit pool, so far from fair that referees were operating as many as three steps apart.

Also in the South, and London / home counties areas in particular, it is quite a transitionary situation.  Referees move here when they are younger but then often move away when they get older and are looking to settle down with families.  I can think of several former and current EFL referees that went through promotion down here but now live elsewhere.

Promoted to National Group

Sunny Gill
Adam Herczeg
Tom Kirk
Tom Parsons
Martin Woods

Congratulations to them all. I must admit they are just names to me. I would be very interested in the valued opinion of our esteemed RTR colleague JCFC whose knowledge of upwardly mobile referees is probably second to none on this site. If he has seen them in times past, are these the names
he would have predicted some while ago when they were working their way up the Pyramid and are there any omissions which surprise or disappoint him ?

I fear that the Sage of St Albans greatly overestimates my judgement, but I refer him to my response in Pyramid Patrol.

I think I’m right in saying that areas like London do not have an actual supply league as such, which means London referees - who get the marks - are sparsely promoted on surrounding supply leagues.

This probably has a knock-on effect on the flow of referees progressing from Level 3 and beyond, in the case of London and areas without its own supply league.

Yes, although some cover London.  You have Spartan South Midlands which is Herts & North, Essex Senior League which covers some East London clubs, Eastern Counties Regional League which again has East London teams, SCEFL in Kent and South East London, and Combined Counties in South West, West, North West and Surrey.  And not uncommon for referees to be moved between those leagues.

And in a few years time we may be having discussions about whether the 3 lads from Greater Manchester can referee City or Utd games……..🤪

Geographical location should be and I hope is irrelevant.
For some reason (I have ideas) however the more Northern Referees seem on balance more successful.

Anyone care to postulate why?

I wonder if there is a difference in observers? Are they perhaps a bit more forgiving up north and harsher down south, leading to better marks overall up north?  Are the RA's or RDO's better up north and put more time and effort into supporting and developing their referees maybe? I see what Ross Joyce, for example, does in supporting his baby referees (the 14-18 age group) and he is amazing with the support he himself gives along with the excellent mentoring scheme he has implemented, it will really pay dividends over the coming years.

I have heard many times and from different sources that Observers are more generous in their estimations in the north rather than the south. The point about RDOs is something I have no direct knowledge about but it seems to be a good point well made.

My theory of what I have experienced is abuse is worse in London and other areas down south compared to up north so more referees quit.

This I can well believe of London

Hackney Marshes on a Sunday morning was always quite an experience!

I have experienced it only a couple of times in my very early officiating career. It is certainly not for the faint hearted. I decided that my refereeing was better suited to slightly more pastoral environs and so I never returned.

Indeed I am surely guiltless in my estimation. Thank you for the pointer.

Congratulations to Tom Bramall who has been promoted to the Premier League.

Also congrats to Natalie Aspinall, Nick Greenhalgh and Steve Meredith on promotion to the premier league as assistants.
