I'm a bit surprised at 'only' 5 being promoted to NL. It sounded like there were quite a few retirements from NL at end of season, plus the three from SG1.

It will be interesting how many get promoted to SG2. I think there's quite a few possible candidates but not sure anyone retired from SG2 at end of season. I'd guess there will be at least one promotion to SG1 but not sure there will be many more than that. Being honest, I think there are some referees on SG2 whose place on the list is perhaps questionable. Some don't seem especially consistent in their performances or seem to have any realistic chance of promotion to SG1, so you do wonder if their continued presence on the list is simply blocking more promising referees from below.

Wow - Tom Kirk was a mid-season promotion from 2B to 2A earlier this year.

Congratulations to them all. I must admit they are just names to me. I would be very interested in the valued opinion of our esteemed RTR colleague JCFC whose knowledge of upwardly mobile referees is probably second to none on this site. If he has seen them in times past, are these the names he would have predicted some while ago when they were working their way up the Pyramid and are there any omissions which surprise or disappoint him ?

Congratulations to all of them on their promotion. Just out of curiosity though, is it coincidence that 3 of the 5 are from the Manchester area? How much does geography play a part in the EFL promotion selection process, if at all?

Based on the map of where premier league referees are from yes geography does play a part in the selection processes with referees from the North West seemingly far more likely to be selected.

In all seriousness geography should have no impact at all.

Congrats too all of them as well.

Given EFL refs travel all over the geography is coincidental, has been a good year for the NW.

Geographical location should be and I hope is irrelevant.
For some reason (I have ideas) however the more Northern Referees seem on balance more successful.

Anyone care to postulate why?

I wonder if there is a difference in observers? Are they perhaps a bit more forgiving up north and harsher down south, leading to better marks overall up north?  Are the RA's or RDO's better up north and put more time and effort into supporting and developing their referees maybe? I see what Ross Joyce, for example, does in supporting his baby referees (the 14-18 age group) and he is amazing with the support he himself gives along with the excellent mentoring scheme he has implemented, it will really pay dividends over the coming years.

My theory of what I have experienced is abuse is worse in London and other areas down south compared to up north so more referees quit.

I know that over time the help and support offered to Officials in Cheshire has been exceptional.
That in recent years amongst those offering such support have been Mike Dean, Anthony Taylor and Rob Jones all of whom have given as freely as possible of their time can only have helped in my opinion
