The Centre Circle
« on: Sat 03 Jul 2021 11:59 »
In a quiet moment of a game yesterday, it struck me that the only reason we have a centre circle marked in the field of play is to ensure that players are the right distance away during a "place kick".  At least that is what is was called when I trained as a referee - the kick-off at the start of each half and after a goal.

In an average game (no extra time), the centre circle is of use a minimum of two times, an average of five times and the total would never get into double figures.

In that same average game (and indeed in almost every game), there will be more corner kicks than place kicks.

So why do we not have a quadrant marked in each corner to ensure that players are the right distance away during a corner kick?  I appreciate that there are small markings outside the field of play on the goal-line and touch line, but having a quadrant marked would be of more use to match control than the centre circle.

Has this never been seriously considered; or is there a killer reason why this should not happen?

I guess the same could be said for the penalty arc, there is no guarantee that it will be used at all in a game.

My thinking is that at both the kick off and a penalty kick there are numerous players around the vicinity so by having markings it makes it easier for a referee to see encroachment (or ignore it, before nemesis replies :) ) At a corner there are usually only one or two players so easier to manage.

Also on a small pitch (minimum 50 yds), with a 44 yd wide penalty area, then if you had 10 yard corner arcs these would go into the penalty area and cause a mess of lines.

Of course the centre circle’s only official use is how you describe, but as referee’s know it can really help with estimation of 10 yds for set free kicks within the rest of the field. As part of my pre-match I always walk out the edge of the centre circle to the edge of the penalty arc and touchline to edge of penalty area as that then gives me an idea of the dimensions of the field of play and a rough idea of having players back 10 yards in non ceremonial free kicks.

* I’ve used yards as that’s how I was taught, youngsters can convert to metres

But will there be four times more ?

Speaking of encroachment at penalty kicks... can someone explain why failing to respect the required distance for a free kick, throw in etc. is a caution, but not for a penalty? It's always puzzled me!
