Congratulations to all - especially those that have been promoted again after just one season.

Interesting though, I thought Will Finnie had a much better season than Josh Smith...

Based on how many games you saw of them ?

I saw Will Finnie at Gresty Road and thought he was excellent, although whether his little schoolboy looks counted against him in other games is anybody's guess. I did not see Josh Smith but recall he was slated in his first game on the FL at Plymouth. He's obviously picked up a great deal since then which is good.

To SG2 Refreee
Michael Salisbury, Josh Smith & Leigh Doughty

I trust that our esteemed Altrincham correspondent is by now fully reconciled to Mr Salisbury's progress to SG2!

Of note, two NL ARs have independently told me that he is by far the best they have worked with in the past year, so he must have something about him.

Three refs have been promoted to SG2 but only two have been promoted to SG1. Does this mean that someone is coming off the SG2 list? The unconfirmed suggestion has been made that James Adcock will be stepping down through injury (a pity imo), which suggests that the three 'oldies' Duncan, Stroud and Woolmer may be carrying on. I await the definitive list with interest.

James Adcock has every intention on making a return.

I think I've read (almost certainly somewhere on here) that Graham Grainger and Matthew MacDermid have been promoted to Category 1 referees.
I don't know if anyone has gone off the list  or about promotions to the 1D list.

Hopefully someone with more Scots knowledge than me may be able to help out.

The SFA Handbook has finally gone online today.

John McKendrick is the only departure from Category 1, as previously suggested, but has moved to Category 4, rather than retiring completely.
As also previously stated, Graham Grainger, Matthew MacDermid and Calum Scott have joined the Category 1 list.

Category 1D now consists of Lorraine Watson, as before, Stewart Luke, promoted mid-season and Dan McFarlane from Aberdeen.

Category 2 has seen the addition of George Calder, Ross Hardie, Chris McNab, Alex Shepherd and Iain Snedden, bringing the total to nine.

Ryan Oliver, who had seemed to be getting some decent appointments, has departed from 2D and does not feature elsewhere. The two additions to this level are Daniel Graves and Paul Timmons.

Could any of our resident European correspondents please advise if any changes to the lists in Spain, Germany, France and Italy? Interested to know who’s gone and who’s new?!

I'm not a German resident, but I am a Rate the Ref resident and changes to the top two divisions can be found in reply 85 of The Wurst is yet to come.

Edited to add link, bmb https://ratetheref.createaforum.com/general-discussion-5/the-wurst-is-yet-to-come-generally-jaundiced-jottings-from-german-jaunts/?message=18695

Thanks, boss! I wasn't sure how to do that!

No changes yet to Spain and Italy. There are still play-off matches to be played. I will ask around about France.

Russia has extended last season's lists until the end of the calendar year, though for reasons discussed elsewhere Vasiliy Kazartsev will not be receiving any appointments for the foreseeable future.

The Italian season finishes later this week.  I believe that consideration is being given to re-uniting the lists for Serie A and B.  I believe this is being done at least in part to accelerate the promotion of promising younger officials and, presumably, to make it possible to nominate officials to the FIFA lists at a younger age.

How very sensible!

If only there was an opportunity to do that in England 😉

All referees in A and B are full time, so make it one list. Then there is no big thing of trial games, who is used as 4ths or those used as VAR, just a fluid list with the top performers getting the games that matter.

How would it work financially though?

I believe SG1 are paid more than SG2, so are you going to increase the earnings of everyone on SG2, even those unlikely to get near refereeing Premier League games (such as Woolmer perhaps), or do you keep SG2 officials at their current salary, in which case what's to stop them not increasing the salary of those who become PL regulars?

I'm not saying it could never work but sure it would have to be considered very careful, including the budget and HR implications.

I thought I read somewhere (although I have not been able to recall the source at the moment) that SG1 and SG2 received very similar retainer salaries. What makes SG1 referees earn much more was that the fees per game were almost twice as much in the Premier League compared to the Championship.

If that is the case - anyone know for certain? - then there would not be any financial reason for not being able to combine the lists (as you would just have more flexibility in allocating the same match fees). Of course there could still may be a contractual or HR obstacles.

Those at the very top would still earn much more. Someone like edy would know this, but I think our FIFA elite refs earn something in the region of €5,000 per match in the UEFA competitions.

Good to see Rob Jones promoted to SG1, fully deserved, and could turn out to be one of the best English referees for the future, the potential is there, also congratulations to all match officials promoted and hope they all have a good season in 2020/21
