Progress?
« on: Mon 10 Apr 2023 07:23 »
I'm finding it increasingly depressing reading the reports of mainly premiership matches which seem to be about such things as 'was it offside, was it a penalty, did he handle, did he kick the opponent, did he abuse match official.and all the numerous other things thst crop up'
It seems to me  that the fun side of football is now missing - I used to go to a match and thoroughly enjoy the afternoon, more so if your team won - part of this fun included -comments about the referee performance etc. was quickly forgotten until the next match - and I suppose this still applies at lower level matches - but obviously the introduction of things such as VAR has meant that  it is now a different kind game at Premiership level than anywhere else - I know progress  is inevitable but if 2 matches were broadcast at the same time on free to watch TV - a Premiership  and a Conference game I know which one I would choose

I watch more foreign football than I do PL. Eredivisie, NBI & NBII, Romanian Super Liga mainly but also the Slovak fortuna liga, Serbian and Albanian leagues. All but NBII have VAR now unfortunately but seems to work much more smoothly, consistently and less intrusively.

It's a funny beast VAR - I was at a game on Saturday where both assistants made a terrible decision and VAR corrected it, a bit slowly, but corrected two KMIs that were blatantly wrong (one went for us, one against us).  But I'd have on the whole much rather we had the two KMIs and just got on with it.  Yes, it improves accuracy but in a game as subjective as football and as flowing as football it isn't the golden bullet it is in other sports, even rugby is more stop start so it works better.  I was almost hoping we got relegated this year so we could get rid in the summer but the recent run has more or less guaranteed we won't so might as well get used to it.

If my team ever got good enough to play a high level game I’d much rather have VAR than not. However when I’m watching England and they score I’m that guy still not really celebrating and sitting in my seat awaiting confirmation from the good folk in charge of VAR. That’s a big down side for me.

Var without the horrible mistakes would be good but with the amount of mistakes happening then I don’t see it’s worth

A four minute pause at Fir Park yesterday to determine if a goal was offside, we eventually decided it was but the guy wasn't interfering so gave the goal anyway.  What a good use of everyone's time that was!
