Seriously, in the 1970s, the Redhill (Surrey) RA were very keen on the two referee system and I actually played in a trial match against a Redhill RA team, using one ref (+ plus two linesmen) in the first half and two referees on their own in the 2nd. Both systems worked OK, but the idea never caught on, even within Surrey, with the lack of referees at grassroots level being cited as the main reason for sticking with one ref and two neutral or club ARs.

Nearly 35 years ago now I was on an extended holiday in the USA and by dint of a strange series of circumstances I ended up in the beautiful Sate of Maine and for three days refereed at a Soccer Camp for teenage boys and girls. They used the two referee system in the matches there. An imaginary line was drawn from corner post to corner post and each referee took a triangle. There were no linesmen so each referee was responsible for everything in their triangle. However offsides were adjudged  differently and quite frankly it was not brilliant. For it to work well you would still need linesmen for the offsides and ball in and out of play. The referees really did have to know each other and develop an almost telepathic understanding of each other as incidents near the centre circle were both your responsibilities. On one occasion my fellow match official and I blew up simultaneously for a foul and gave it different ways !

Some sports lend themselves to double officiating. I certainly don't think football and rugby are among them.

As an aside. As a result of this Camp I met one of the parents, a hugely successful New York corporate lawyer. He was quite keen to discuss having a "Britisher" working in his firm.  What might have been ! The riches of Croesus but not much contentment I expect.

Did you also caution both players? That would be hilarious!  ;)

No we didn't, that would have been compounding the felony ! :-[  More seriously, I think it does go to show how an incident can appear very different when viewed from a different angle. Sometimes it's good to remember that in our professional game where an on-field referee only has one angle ( unless some brilliant individual finds the secret of bilocation ) whereas the multiple camera angles may show an incident in a totally different light and then the old cry goes up " how could the referee not spot that ?".

I was a basketball referee for many years, a sport that uses two referees in quite a confined area.  This happens on occasions and the rules allow for it.  Both referees act independently as you are looking at different things.  So it is quite possible for two fouls to be called, either for the same team or opposite teams.  All fouls are counted, one doesn't overrule another if happening simultaneously.  A double foul restarted with a jump ball.

Having 2 referees never gave a problem, the real issue was officiating on your own if the other one didn't arrive.  In the USA now there are three referees, I believe. :o

The proliferation of match officials is common to many sports. With football, in the olden days there was a referee and two linos. Now, at a Major Cup Final say, there are just about as many in the officiating team ( including all the VAR people ) as there are in one of the playing teams.
