M Oliver - Cardiff v Man City
« on: Mon 24 Sep 2018 08:29 »
Surprised there is no thread on this game, especially given Oliver was 2-3 yards away from the shocking foul from Ralls on Gundogan.

Positioning was superb, his attitude to diffuse the angry City players, but then he let it all unravel with giving a YC imo.

Thoughts?
David Silva olé.

Something that struck me between the Atkinson and Oliver yellow cards was that while Atkinson produced the card very quickly, Oliver seemed to delay slightly. Perhaps he was getting input from his AR or just giving himself thinking time, but it suggested to me he may have been considering yellow or straight red. On the other hand, he may have already decided yellow and was more intent on quelling the anger of the City players.  I'm not sure it was 'shocking' in that it was 2 players going for the ball from opposite directions with the ball off the ground. Inevitably one gets there first and the other commits a foul. It therefore proved to be high and dangerous.  While 'intent' is not relevant, it is a situation which happens not infrequently.

A couple of pundits, while saying it was a mistake, were not over critical because seeing it once at full speed, it is not always easy to detect just how serious a challenge is.  The slo-mo and stills showed it to be dangerous.  Chris Kamara speculated whether the Cardiff player could have pulled out if he realised he wasn't going to get the ball first, but seemed unsure.

I don't know whether the DT had the stats right but they showed Cardiff conceding only 5 free kicks and City 4.  Either Oliver played a heck of a lot of advantages or Cardiff were more circumspect than the treatment they dished out to City last season in the cup match.

Interesting that arguably our 2 best referees were both involved in, and criticised for, not producing red cards.  Oliver in particular is not known to avoid the big decisions.
