I am a little surprised by all the excitement over Brooks. Perhaps others see more in him than I do.
Robinsons star in more in the descendancy of late so talk of him possibly getting onto the PL a couple of years back seems a long way off now. Interestingly my feeling is that he has had more League 1 and 2 games this season than most of his fellow SG2 refs

From what I have red on RTR I don't think many correspondents to this forum have shown a great degree of excitement over Brooks but reasonably informed opinion declares that those responsible for making promotions do have him very much in their sights.

It's the old argument about the "annointed" ones. There are referees who, to my untutored eye seem to be average members of the pack but who appear to get "adopted" for a rapid promotion.  Josh Smith is in the annointed category and his promotion to SG2 seems absurdly accelerated in my view as he hadn't really proved anything at FL level. Brooks is also in this category as was Coote a few years back and Hackett many years back. Darren England also enjoys "annointed" status but in his case there is obvious and genuine talent bursting through. It's just how it is and one would find similar scenarios in most professions with the rank and file ( in whose number I include myself ) sometimes scratching their collective heads thinking along the lines of " how on earth did s/he climb the greasy pole so quickly and on a lack of any evidence that I can see "

We all see it on a daily basis, except that we all know how and why it's happened.

Saw Napthine only once, at Highbury. He had a very good match I seem to recall. Being located in the middle of England ( Loughborough ) wasn't he one of that band of referees who officiated at every League ground in the country?

I wonder which team he supported.  I don't recall seeing him at OT but I'm sure he must have refereed there.

What a delightful story. It's good to see someone who has given so much to the game of football, receiving such recognition. I am sure he felt enormously honoured.  Tempus fugit; the referee I remember had a shock of black hair !  Napthine is, to me, a most unusual name. I have never ever come across it apart from Gilbert.

Maybe not at OT, but I certainly saw him referee Palace v Man Utd at Selhurst Park in Sept 1985, League Cup 2nd rd 1st leg which Utd won 1-0. He had a good game. Vic Callow refereed the 2nd leg which I also saw and which Man Utd won 1-0 again.

No one has done much observing since 2018/19.  Maybe he will reappear.
