It looks like the penny has finally dropped... although this should have been done years ago!!

Thoughts?

Exactly what posters on RTR have been suggesting for some time. Has Mr Riley been listening to us at last?

I also wonder if words were said at FIFA level towards the shocking lack of numbers currently with a white badge in England.

We are relying on some officials way past or close to 50 to officiate in one of the most popular leagues on the planet. East cannot do a game every week.

The model in Italy seems to work, and although they have to retire at 45, they seem to have a good constant stream coming through.

We are so far behind the times in this country it's staggering.

I’ve just seen this story on Sky Sports News...apparently Hooper is injured according to them!

I think, especially if VAR is to be introduced, we need to get more refs into the PL and very quickly!

I think we will see more officials coming through over the next year or two, especially with the probably implementation of VAR.

A lot of the article sounds like pure speculation though - I wouldn't be surprised if we saw one or two SG2 refs used on the odd game as has happened before but I doubt we will see a flood of SG2 referees  suddenly used by Christmas.

Agree there is a fair amount of speculation in there, but then again they must have got it from somewhere.

Clearly it needs to happen, and has needed to happen for a long time now.  Having seen Rob Jones and Andy Madley a few times I have no doubt they could immediately step up with few problems.  Not seen Darren Bond so can't comment, and whilst I know Tim Robinson is highly thought of I have yet to see a game that he has fully convinced me in.

To my mind, the report is too detailed, accurate and concise to be speculation, and I agree that this is what RTR contributors have been asking for for some time.

If Simon Hooper has been injured since the start of the season, then what's he been doing refereeing Championship and L1/2 games? Never known as a speedy Gonzales, his performance at Blackpool last weekend looked really laboured and he had to rely on his AR for a late and crucial penalty decision when he was too far behind play to be able to make a decision himself. Fortunately the award of a penalty to Blackpool was correct. If he is injured, he is doing himself and the players no good whatsoever by turning out, and he needs to sort himself out before even thinking about refereeing at the top level.

Is it the case that the Fitness Test for SG1 is more rigorous than for SG2 and National List? I seem to remember vaguely reading that once. If it is, then that would explain perhaps why Hooper is refereeing at Championship,Div 1 & 2 level but not PL.  Doesn't bode that well for a stellar career in the top flight if that is so.

Personally I have never been convinced by Hooper or Robinson. A Madley is a fine referee, who I have heard was interviewed for SG1 but not taken in the last round. Bond is also impressive.

Well, this is what I mean really. You say that the report is 'accurate' but then the suggestion that Simon Hooper has been injured since the start of the season can't be that accurate if he is officiating games.

It sounds like extrapolating quite a lot from the fact a few SG2 referees are being used as VARs this weekend.

If current SG2 referees handle any more than perhaps a small handful of Premier League games before Christmas then I would be surprised (I think SG2 referees were used for 3 games in the 3-4 months between January and the end of the season last year.)

And therein lies the problem. Look beyond Madley and Jones and there is an awful lot of dross in SG2.

Well, we're almost three months on from this article and so far we haven't had a single SG2 referee appointed to referee a Premier League game, despite Graham Scott also being unavailable for some of this period.

If anything, it seems to have happened less over the past few years - I remember 4 years or so (before SG2 was formed) the likes of Graham Scott, Stuart Attwell and Keith Stroud being used quite a lot on the Premier League when they were  not SG officials.

With the introduction of VAR, and Bobby Madley having gone and others perhaps following at the end of this season, I'm sure they will need to promote at least 2-3 officials at the end of this season.
