For a time he was regarded as the best referee in the world and yet his career never quite seemed to fulfil that accolade. Did he receive many International Cup Final appointments? I'm struggling to remember any.

How old was he? i don't think he can have been that old. May he rest in peace.

Born 1.5.60 according to FIFA site, so that would make him only 58. Very sad news.

Should have Refereed the 1990 World Cup Final - but politics saw that job go to the ludicrous Mexican Codesal.

Hvil i fred Peter...

Wow, that is young. One of the Danish websites reports he died after a long illness and translating google translates version of translating into readable English it looks like it was skin cancer.

Brilliant referee of his day, very imposing on a pitch. One of several from that part of the world who proved you could referee above the level of your own national competition.

Very sad news, an excellent referee in his time.  He refereed at the 1990 and 1994 world cups and Euro 92 and 96.  I am old enough to remember him, he was the favourite to referee the 1994 World Cup Final after impressing earlier in the tournament but FIFA choose Sandor Puhl (an odd choice as in the QF he missed Mauro Tassotti's violent elbow on Luis Enrique which would have given Spain a penalty and reduced Italy to 10 men - in the end Italy won 2-1).  1990 had the same politics with the Mexican.

He then went on to referee at Euro 96 bit in the Bulgaria v Romania game but failed to give Romania a goal when the ball had done over the line.  Also at Euro 96 was Kim Milton-Neilsen of whom the Danish baton was then passed he went on to France 98 - David Beckham and the rest.  He never refereed a big European final but a very sad loss to refereeing.

Codesal was, I believe, the son in law of the Chairman of the Referees Committee. However I am sure he received the appointment on merit.  ::)

Hopefully such politicical appointing isn't quite as prevalent these days, of if it is, I think it is more subtle.

Agreed. Odd how one incident could ruin a top referee's international career. Same with the Italian ref in the England v Germany match in WC 2010. RIP.

As others have said, this is sad news - particularly at such an early age. Having seen him acting as Observer at Pittodrie in 2015, however, I did write that time had not treated him kindly, so it is perhaps not entirely surprising.

I agree that he was an excellent referee, in my opinion one of the best of his generation, though he was undone by one mistake, as subsequently was Rosetti, both through errors more attributable to their assistants.(Graham Poll was also undone by a Danish assistant, but was allowed a second chance, where the failure was ultimately his.) Sandor Puhl, too, fell rapidly from grace after missing a dreadful foul.

The referee for the England Germany match mentioned was the Uruguayan Jorge Larrionda, though in that case it is hard to see how any official could have been in a position to judge with certainty. He was in any case approaching the end of his career.

One other excellent referee whose career ended prematurely was Zoran Petrovic, though I have always assumed that this was a consequence of the conflicts in the former Yugoslavia.

RIP - a great referee

The story which is always does the rounds about the 1994 final is that Peter Mikkelsen was pencilled in to do it (although he didn't have the best tournament he was definitely the favourite). However, FIFA president at the time Joăo Havelange interrupted the referees committee meeting and fearing a cardfest like the 1990 final said it should go to the ref who had shown the least cards so far.

Would make sense as Puhl was not very experienced at the time and had a rather ropey (if card free) tournament, missing Mauro Tassotti breaking Luis Enrique's nose in his quarter final!

One thing I do remember from that 1994 Final was that Puhl had two of the most useless Linesman to "assist" him. One of the commentators said that Puhl was  endeavouring to controll the match single-handed " he's on his own out there"  and , from memory, he didn't do too bad a job of it.

That is the same rumour I have heard.

He probably had one of the best finals of that era.
