Where was this hysteria or emergency meetings when VAR didn't review the brawl at the United v Palace game properly recently and failed to advise that Ayew be sent off (or even review the Casemiro incident correctly) or when Fabinho wasn't sent off for Liverpool against Brighton?

They were subjective decisions, so even if wrong there is likely to be an element of understanding as it is in the opinion of the referee.  Even this weekend that will probably apply for the Soucek handling not being given, most people think it was a penalty but it is still a subjective decision.

The offside decisions are very different, they are factual and black and white, no in the opinion of the referee to come into play, and it is failure to use the technology properly that has led to incorrect decisions.  This means there is always going to be way less understanding about the decisions.

I know the PL referees meet regularly throughout the season anyway so it might just be there were meetings scheduled for soon after some of those incidents you mention.

They are obviously embarrassing mistakes as offsides like this should fall under the matter of fact category and it's important improvements are made. But in a sense I'm a bit less concerned about things like this as it seems unlikely they'd be repeated any time soon, compared to things like missing red cards for SFP or not awarding penalties for handball which seem more likely to recur in the next week or two.

In terms of the role of the AVAR, I think it is the VAR who generally does the offside process as with everything else - I think this might be done differently by FIFA at World Cup level. Without knowing the exact process, I think it is difficult to put blame on the AVAR. It might be the Hawkeye operators could have helped more but I don't think much is known about them publicly.

On a wider note, I think it would be sensible to take Brooks off the Merseyside derby tonight and Arsenal V Man City on Wednesday, simply because the headlines will be pretty bad if he's left on them and a perceived VAR error occurs. He's had plenty of good VAR appointments so hopefully he can recover fairly quickly.
Surely it would make sense that the Avar does the offsides, one of his main on field functions.

Can they seriously stop putting this ex refs on var they have all made bowlers this season and how Lee Mason failed to pick up 2 offsides in the build up to Brentford’s goal is just staggering, it could cost us the title it certainly cost us 2 points today, but from the bits I did see on MOTD the shots out weight what Brentford had to us looked like the dominated, but the stats say otherwise, I did think Peter Bankes did ok from the bits I seen he got let down by the VAR like a lot of the referees have this season,
Arsenal beat Liverpool earlier in the season when an offside in the build up to one of their goals was missed, an Arsenal player handled the ball in the penalty area but nothing was given and they were awarded the softest of penalties. Were you criticising the officials after that game?

Possibly, although of course it's not always the case in general that the AVAR is an assistant - Stuart Attwell is AVAR for PSG V Bayern Munich in Champions League tonight for instance. People have complained previously about PL doing VAR different to other parts of the world and if a VAR would have been required to draw lines in CL then I guess you could say it also made sense for them to do that in PL to give them that experience.

It might be there's some merit to AVARs having more involvement in offside, although if they've never had this input before then I'm doubtful about if suddenly having them do that now is going to improve things or you'll just have less experienced people on VAR doing it. The situations we saw at the weekend were pretty unusual, and quite incredible they both happened on the same day, so I'm not sure if they need to completely change the whole way they do offside overnight as there's always the potential for inadvertently making things worse.

It sounds like they will have semi-automated offside in PL next season probably so I guess it makes sense to focus on how they are going to implement that as smoothly as possible.

Lee Mason has paid the price and left PGMOL. I get no pleasure in this but perhaps it was inevitable. I can only wish him good luck in the future.
