Can they seriously stop putting this ex refs on var they have all made bowlers this season and how Lee Mason failed to pick up 2 offsides in the build up to Brentford’s goal is just staggering, it could cost us the title it certainly cost us 2 points today, but from the bits I did see on MOTD the shots out weight what Brentford had to us looked like the dominated, but the stats say otherwise, I did think Peter Bankes did ok from the bits I seen he got let down by the VAR like a lot of the referees have this season,

This is the annual Arsenal meltdown, isn't it?

Nope there was 2 other shocking reckons in other matches to and most of the mistakes are being made by specialist VAR’s most of the time, it’s either Dean, Mason and now Swarbrick, maybe they either need better training or in Swarbricks case as he used to be the Head of VAR, I don’t want to say fired as that is probably a tad harsh, and it looks like he has already been demoted but maybe they need to do away with the specialist var roles

Problem is if you do away with specialist VAR roles you are going to dilute the quality of onfield referees further as more and more will be doing VAR.  In Scotland fans of non Premiership clubs (give me three months, I'll be one) are complaining about that already as our better refs are in the top flight more and more either on the field or in the booth.

You say that but Antony Taylor one of the best refs in England never does VAR, and this specialist VAR roles are the ones making the mistakes

Yes it did cost them two points. Doesn’t matter that they where lucky not to concede 3 but they didn’t. Then they defended a set piece well but referee incompetence suggested otherwise.
What is Arteta more angry about do you think
1) not winning one of 5 challenges in the area
2) a VAR error that wouldn't have happened if AFC had managed to challenge for the ball.

If there is any hope, VAR referees may learn from their mistakes. Perhaps a little optimistic, but I spent all my life learning from my mistakes. Hopefully, I only made them once!

The VAR error clearly as Webb and the PGMOL have come out and apologised saying it was human error and the goal shouldn’t of stood, although nothing will happen Mason will be taken off VAR duties for a week, and everything will be back to normal, the result won’t change and they ain’t going to award us the 3 points or reply the match from that precise moment, and if it costs us the league come end of season then there is going to be uproar

It is interesting that most of the higher profile VAR errors seem to come from the supposedly specialist VARs. Apart from yesterday, Mason’s error in the Newcastle v Crystal Palace match, awarding a Palace free kick and disallowing a goal after Willock was pushed in the penalty are a sticks in the mind. Swarbrick has only been back a few weeks and has already missed one of the clearest red cards (Fabinho v Brighton) and one of the clearest penalty awards (Soucek yesterday) that you’ll ever see. Dean missed the Cucurella hair pull early this season.  If these are the specialists, we have a real problem.

Please stop with the "it cost us 2 points". You were lucky not to concede 3 before then. So give it up please.

Wasn't there still some time left in the game to play?

I dont remember any  matches being completed after 74 mins, when a goal has been scored or disallowed.
An unintentional error occurred, unfortunately you have to accept it and move on.
Some go your way, some dont, its called football.

Where was this hysteria or emergency meetings when VAR didn't review the brawl at the United v Palace game properly recently and failed to advise that Ayew be sent off (or even review the Casemiro incident correctly) or when Fabinho wasn't sent off for Liverpool against Brighton?

I know the PL referees meet regularly throughout the season anyway so it might just be there were meetings scheduled for soon after some of those incidents you mention.

They are obviously embarrassing mistakes as offsides like this should fall under the matter of fact category and it's important improvements are made. But in a sense I'm a bit less concerned about things like this as it seems unlikely they'd be repeated any time soon, compared to things like missing red cards for SFP or not awarding penalties for handball which seem more likely to recur in the next week or two.

In terms of the role of the AVAR, I think it is the VAR who generally does the offside process as with everything else - I think this might be done differently by FIFA at World Cup level. Without knowing the exact process, I think it is difficult to put blame on the AVAR. It might be the Hawkeye operators could have helped more but I don't think much is known about them publicly.

On a wider note, I think it would be sensible to take Brooks off the Merseyside derby tonight and Arsenal V Man City on Wednesday, simply because the headlines will be pretty bad if he's left on them and a perceived VAR error occurs. He's had plenty of good VAR appointments so hopefully he can recover fairly quickly.

If I've said it once I've said it a million times - Lee Mason should be nowhere near Premier League football.

... or any football!

Issue surely isn’t that there are ‘Ex-refs’ as VAR?? If anything, I’d say that’s the long-term optimum - experienced refs, used to having VAR themselves, who become dedicated VARs and focus solely on that role. Better than having active refs doing a game Saturday and then bombing off to do VAR duty the next day (rather than rest & recovery).

Maybe the lesson to take from the Brentford goal incident is for VAR to always prioritise the check for offside first because if the player is offside, nothing else matters. If he's not offside, then check to see if he's committed a foul. Had this been the protocol, the offside would have been detected and the "goal" wouldn't have stood.

I thought VAR was checking an offside initially but one that came earlier in the build-up? Dale Johnson suggests Mason thought he had committed an offside offence but they weren't able to plot the lines for that one so had to go with the on-field call.

But perhaps the second offside would have been easier/quicker to judge!
