Ovidiu Hațegan / Germany v Netherlands

Below you can see Virgil van Dijk consoling Ovidiu Hategan after final whistle. At half-time Hategan got the message that his mother passed away... Very sad story, showing once again that referees are humans, not robots, and we should have much more empathy when talking about their performances...

"Virgil van Dijk on consoling referee Ovidiu Hategan after the game, "That man broke down, stood with tears in his eyes because he had just lost his mother. I wished him strength and said that he had blown well. It's a small thing, but maybe it helps him."

What a guy Virgil is!!"

Not someone that I will ever like, as a referee, but sorry for your loss Mr Hategan. Must have been very difficult to continue for the 2nd half and respect to him for having the strength to do so. Virgil Van Dijk is an example of what is good about the game.
Hajrá Lilák. Csak a Kispest. Hajrá Magyarok! Hajrá játékvezetői csapat! Soha ne add fel. Nincs sárga kérem!!! No Chris Kavanagh doesn't live in Ashton or even in the Greater Manchester area!!

I agree with VV and bmb but am very surprised, if he received the news at half time, that he refereed the second half.  I am sure in those circumstances, I couldn't have carried on  and hardly fair to the players, officials and supporters when, inevitably, your mind would be on other things.
