On Barren Ground
« on: Tue 26 Apr 2022 08:46 »
A recent thread on cup final appointments bemoans the fact that Kent haven't had a Cup Final Referee for some time..

Acknowledging that my Upton's research only ever covered two counties, and for the Men's final alone, I wonder if there are more barren runs than these?

Derbyshire
Arthur Kingscott  1900 1901
John Ibbotsen 1910
Harry Kingscott 1931.......

Nottinghamshire
Arthur Adams 1913
Noel Watson 1925
Reg Leafe 1955......

So if Mr Coote gets into the middle this year (former Newark) that'll be quite something!

Yes the Orpington man  refereed the 2017 fa cup final and was an assistant(linesman) in 1995
When mr Ashby from worcestershire refereed the final.

I didn’t realise Coote resides in Kent now.

Bad news for Fulham, we will be seeing him regularly then next season.

When Bennett was on the list he frequented CC at very regular intervals.

I assume you mean 2007 as he retired in 2010!

Has my original home county of Suffolk ever produced a FA Cup Final Referee? I can't think of one. Russell Driver got a Reserve appointment in the early 1970s I seem to recall but I can't think of a referee.  Norfolk of course have had two, Norman Burtenshaw and Alf Grey.

Sorry, I thought we were talking about FA Cup Final appointments. Ray Lewis did not receive this honour despite deserving it (imo) but, like others such as John Martin, Alan Wilkie and Lester Shapter, did receive a League Cup Final appointment.

We could add Martin Bodenham to that fine list too

Urgent message from Air Traffic Control; a huge herd of pigs seen flying very low over Surrey airspace which might constitute a danger to aircraft.
