Great decision by Darren England on VAR to overrule the AR who flagged for offside (was at least half a yard onside) on Saint-Maximim then give a penalty for a foul by Ake

VAR at its best there

Correct procedure followed as Kevin Friend felt it was a penalty in the first instance so no need to visit the monitor. Very well handled by all.

I dont think Friend ever signalled for a penalty he signalled for offside.

Great shout by Friend for the penaly for foul by Walker though

That's because the AR would have told him he was going to raise the flag once the attack broke down.  You wouldn't signal a penalty knowing you would then immediately give an offside.

I agree, I actually think if you watch it back he is about to signal the penalty then, correctly, stops himself and signals offside. The commentators even remarked that VAR asked Friend if he felt it was a penalty. He must have said yes so there is no OFR needed.

I must say I’ve never been a massive fan of Kevin Friend, but tonight’s performance summed up his season, solid and dependable. Many of his colleagues would love to fall into this category!

Haven't seen the first penalty incident yet. I listened to the first half on the radio (R5)and the commentary team weren't convinced it was a penalty, though when I got to watch the second half, their commentators seemed happy with it. I'd assumed that once the incorrect offside was overruled, the penalty decision would still be VAR checked by Mr England, but from previous remarks that doesn't appear to be the case?

No doubt about the second penalty, which I did catch and it seemed a reasonable second half from Mr Friend.

The penalty for me was nailed on.

Yes Mr. England checked the penalty, otherwise there would be no reason to overrule the offside. My point previously was just that Friend didn't need to go to the monitor as he was also of the opinion that if there was no offside it was a penalty. So VAR just confirmed this to him.

Well here's my view of the penalty.  It was certainly well onside, so no problem there.  As I saw it Joelinton broke away into the penalty area, Ake, unwisely, slid to block the ball he expected Joelinton to play.  Instead of playing the ball Joelinton stretched over the ball and landed his foot on top of Ake's outstretched leg and fell over.
