NB1 referee of 2018
« on: Sun 30 Dec 2018 23:47 »
The winner of the NB1 referee of 2018 is bmb's favourite NB1 ref Péter Solymosi.

It is no indication of merit table rankings or anything like that, the votes are made by the 12 NB1 club owners or a senior member from the board of directors. It is an indication by the clubs themselves as to who they thought was the best performing referee across the whole year.

Péter, was the clear winner with 4/12 votes cast. István Vad came 2nd with 2/12 votes, whilst Viktor Kassai, Balázs Berke, Ádám Farkas, Zoltán Iványi, Ádám Németh & Csaba Pintér all received 1 vote each.

Very pleased for him, not least because he is my personal favourite! He's just finished a +1 year. Like UEFA/FIFA we run on a Jan-Dec yearly basis in Hungary, as opposed to season by season. Péter & Zsolt Szabó were both due to retire last December, having turned 45 during 2017, but the MLSz finally updated their retirement policy in line with FIFA/UEFA, which allowed them to both carry on refereeing into 2018. (Cue mass relief in the bmb household!) They are now allowed to carry on beyond 45, I believe up to a maximum age of 50 in the professional leagues, subject to merit table marks being within the acceptable limits and passing a fitness test & other additional medical exams. Those are however assessed on a half season basis, prior to the Autumn season & the Spring season starting. Zsolt Szabó won last year, also with 4 votes. He however struggled with his fitness during Spring 2018 & retired on the last day of season 2017/18. He wasn't appointed to any games, even as AAR for 11/12 weeks, so it was obvious it was coming. When a referee retires in Hungary, there is a bit of a fuss made pre-match with a host of presentations ahead of kick off and the game is normally the live TV game. They are normally at the very least presented with a signed shirt from each of the teams playing and on the back of the shirt is the total number of NB1 games they have refereed and their name. I was dreading there being any such presentation ahead of the Kispest v Lilák game on the final day of the autumn season & am taking the fact that there wasn't as an indication that Péter will be back for the spring season at least, subject of course to him passing the fitness test & other medical tests required. I would have thought he would though, he's always been pretty fit and appears to take good care of himself.

A breakdown of which club voted for which ref is available at http://www.hungarianfootball.com/2018/12/30/peter-solymosi-voted-nb1-referee-of-2018/ if anyone is interested!

Gratulálok Péter

Game 277. He has the 3rd highest number of appearances. Zsolt Szabó has the most (321) and Viktor Kassai the 2nd most (309). He has 3/4 years left yet so should end up with the highest number!

Hajrá Lilák. Csak a Kispest. Hajrá Magyarok! Hajrá játékvezetői csapat! Soha ne add fel. Nincs sárga kérem!!! No Chris Kavanagh doesn't live in Ashton or even in the Greater Manchester area!!
