I would argue it's no indicator of fitness whatsoever, when you can pass the fitness test (and therefore by definition be deemed fit enough to do the games) but then not be offered games because of how you look.

I might even suggest it's illegal.....

There are a lot more officials on the 'missing list' than those listed.

The PGMOL are not currently offering EFL appointments to any official who measured in excess of the stated body fat limit (different depending on your role and level) regardless of whether or not they passed the fitness test.

This may or may not be responsible for some of the absences you mention.

Is there any record of what the parameters are? Body fat % shows remarkably different physical results on different frames and natural ‘normal’ levels range wildly across different people, so it’s always struck me as a fairly poor indicator of fitness.

......... and an even worse one of fitness to referee.

How did the likes of kettle et al pass this then. I can’t think of anyone more “fatter” than Kettle apart from Moss?

He looks a bit more svelte this season!

I saw Jon Moss in his record shop a couple of weeks ago. He's certainly not 'fat'.

Brett Huxtable has a Pizza Trophy game next week, all the way up in Burton, bizarrely.

Hmmmm.. calling Kettle elegant seems a bit far fetched! 😂😂

Jon Moss certainly is not fat; that is quite correct. He appears to be rather barrel chested which means that he will never present as pencil thin but that is due to bone structure not fat deposits.

M'learned friend is absolutely right to point out that fitness to referee is not determined by body fat ratio. Of course the pace of the game was slower in years gone by but a very good referee from yesteryear was Sheffield's Michael Lowe and he certainly carried a fair bit of timber. With them both coming from Sheffield, I used to maintain that Lowe was a far better referee than the equally full-figured Hackett. Sadly for Lowe my opinion was not shared by the powers that be who seemed to invest a huge amount in Hackett who, in my opinion, was never more than an average referee.

I think had that been rigorously enforced then the likes of Steve Dunn, Paul Durkin etc would have been fixtureless, yet they passed fitness tests both nationally and internationally, both capable of reading games and being there or there abouts when needed.
Quite a hard thing to shift quickly, are we not at risk of causing referees to have eating disorders or worse?

…..not forgetting Mr Blobby himself, Phil Dowd

Mr Poll carried a fair bit of bulk too..

I agree though, Hackett was in a different league when it came to carrying “a fair bit of timber”

There are also a few missing faces from Step 1/2A…

Hulme - Retired

Gibbons - Rumoured to have undergone major heart surgery

Collins

Evans

Johnson

Also seems to be a shortage of Step 1 AR’s with National List covering a few games recently.
